View Full Version : Technically am I part east African or not?

I'm just curious? I thought I was maybe because I did ancestrydna and the range given was 0-7% eastern Bantu. And every time I put my raw data somewhere I get an east African result.
On DNA.land 12% east African 2.4% north African and 1.7% ambiguous west Eurasian. On gedmatch its all over the place. My eurogene and k7 was 67% east Africa. And 17% west Africa. But my mom did 23andme and she got no east African but got a l3 haplogroup maternal of course. I was comparing her results to mine hers having more Nigerian and because most Nigerians have north African heritage she has more north Africa heritage but less east. As far as distance. So I expect to not get any east African on 23andme. But its odd because ive gotten it everywhere else on low numbers but I consistently get a number. I don't see also how my dad could be giving all the east African heritage as he was black american too. So does it mean I do or don't have east African heritage. And if I do how did it get there?

Yes and No:

-Ancestry DNA's "Eastern-Bantu" cluster includes Angola, so this wouldn't be completely indicative of East-African Ancestry

- According to the creator of the eurogene ANE k7 calculator, this calc is "specifically designed to estimate Ancient North Eurasian (ANE) ancestry (http://bga101.blogspot.ca/)". A lot of GEDmatch admix calculators are a work in progress or geared specifically to render participants of select ancestry -- it can be a bit of a hit or miss in terms of accuracy, if you're admixture wasn't the main focus of a particular calc -- that might be the case for this calc; I'm also getting an exaggerated "East African" affinity.

-Not all Nigerians have North African ancestry, in fact, the majority don't apart from some ethnic groups within or strongly connected to Northern regions (that would include Chadic speakers found also in the east).

You might find this useful - it's my favourite blog and probably the best one out there for comparing Afro-Diasporan results with commercial DNA companies (ADNA, 23andMe etc): Tracing African Roots (https://tracingafricanroots.wordpress.com/)

It's worth noting, there's non-negligible East-African (Nilo-Saharan) ancestry found in native West-African populations -- you can notice this within the population spreadsheet for the afmd K8 calc' *the highest are around the Sahel (Nigerian_Fulani, Mali_Bambara) but the average among the Nigerian_Igbo are also noteworthy (~3%).

In short, your East-African affinity seems consistent but wouldn't forcibly imply "recent"/modern East-African ancestry in a genealogical time frame.

Conversely, this affinity might indeed be fairly recent (<200 years) due to the East-African slave trade -- there's very little historical documentation compared to the West-African Atlantic Slave Trade but mtDNA and autosmal DNA seem to given a high probability of it's extent across the Atlantic. Some references place the East-African amount of all the Atlantic Slave Trade at < ~5%.

There's also quite a few blogs from African-Americans and Hispanics reporting Malagasy ancestry within a genealogical time-frame -- who knows, maybe that might explain a part of your E_Asian affinity (*don't quote me on that though;): Got Roots in Madagascar? (http://rootsrevealed.blogspot.ca/2014/06/got-roots-in-madagascar.html)

My parents are from Central-East Africa but have found distant African-American and Hispanic matches. Our closest distant GEDmatches (>10cM) trace themselves to a family in Roanoke County, Alabama. The verdict is still out on whether or not these are IBD or IBS matches (ie. true or false) but I'm betting on the former -- we're currently having more family members tested to see what happens.

*Regardless of my personal outcome, I've come across a good number of East-Africans on GEDmatch with AA matches (>10cM).

If you're interested, feel free to follow the sub-thread -- it delves into the topic in more detail and has some great input and rebuttals from other members: Echoes of the East-African Slave Trade - Distant Diasporic Matches - IBS or IBD? Out of curiosity, what's your admix results using puntDNAL's K8 African only? I find it's "Nilo-Saharan" cluster to render accurate results.

On ancestrydna Angola is included with the Khoisan not eastern Bantu of which I got less than 1% estimate of. 0-2% range

...you're mistaken, Angola is cited within ancestryDNA's Africa Southeastern Bantu cluster; it's one of the primary locations along with South Africa and Namibia. Below is a description of the cluster taken from a snapshot of my results, you'll notice Nigeria (West-Africa) and Congo (Central-Africa) are also cited:

http://i.imgur.com/kIQd1gV.png

This is a prime reason why we shouldn't fixate too much on certain clusters for absolute meaning of recent admixture -- for ancestry DNA, this cluster clearly overlaps a huge region of the continent including both the African Southeastern Bantu, and the Khoisan clusters you've just mentioned (if not more). The blog I posted earlier gives further explanation as to how we should be careful interpreting clusters from major DNA companies. Oddly enough, this cluster is interpreted as Nilotic (aka Ancient East African) ancestry which is completely inaccurate and misleading -- there's actually a few petitions online to have AncestryDNA correct this.

That's the thing though in some calculators I have a closer affinity to east African than the Fulani people I see how my mom compares to me her results had more north African and less east African and she had closer distance to the Fulani and the Hausa and Yoruba and Igbo people. It also appears my family is Hausa. Which is who I was referring to. Here's my Oracle. No matter where I go I got an east African component it seems especially with Kenyans.

The population oracles on puntDNAL's Africa only K8 admix calculator were intended for kits of only African ancestry -- the calculator will otherwise misinterpret one's non-African(SSA) affinity and broadly assign it with Western_Semitic and Omitic clusters; this wouldn't provide absolute meaningful oracle results for self-identified African-Americans with notable Eurasian affinities (oftentimes exceeding >10%). The Kenyan and Fulani oracle results is the calculator equating your Eurasian ancestry (most likely West-European) with that of Cushitic speakers but they're two completely different kinds of modern ancestry. The Sub-Saharan ancestry found in African-Americans is a wide mixture of ethnic groups spanning throughout predominantly Western and Central Africa with a small estimated amount (<~5%) originating from East-Africa.

I do hope you find the other posted blogs helpful, they'll answer your questions with more tangible examples -- they certainly helped my learning curve. I'm not trying to be combative or negate your East-African affinity, it just might not be as recent/modern as you think based on how you're trying to deduce it. That being said, there's a good number of Hispanic and African-Americans with detected East-African matches (>10cM) as well as mtDNA evidence suggesting a recent connection through the East-African Slave trade.

Here's an excerpt from a Uganda mtDNA paper, The Mitochondrial DNA Heritage of the Baganda, Lugbara and Acholi from Uganda (Isabirye, Dan 2010 (https://dspace.nwu.ac.za/handle/10394/4221)):

"..the clustering of the Ugandan sequences with sequences from African American and Hispanic individuals was evidence of slave trade involving the shipping of people from Uganda to North America."

Out of curiosity, have you reached the 2000 cap on GEDmatch? Also, have you noticed any African names on your list? - there's not many of us but the numbers are starting to increase

It includes Namibia and Angola hunters and gatherers. Khoisan's aren't included with eastern Bantu. They're two very different people and I don't get a lot with the San or mbuti people usually as I do with a least Africa

My estimate for European heritage on ancestrydna is below 10%.... Just saying.... And that's the raw data I'm using. Not all African Americans are mixed. My mom was 5% non African heritage on DNA.land.

...you're mistaken, Angola is cited within ancestryDNA's Africa Southeastern Bantu cluster; it's one of the primary locations along with South Africa and Namibia.

Also I'm about the same genetically as a Nigerian is I got 46% Nigeria on ancestrydna. So please do not stereotype. My results may be atypical but they are what they are. And yes I'm related to the Fulani through my mother's side. Not sure if my father is Hausa or not. He has more Nigerian heritage than I do at 45% and than my mother does. Nigerians generally has as low as 53% Nigerian result. On average 64% which on DNA.land I had 53% Niger. So yeah I'm not that typically I guess of an African american. In fact none of my results were 20%. Estimates like most black Americans are.

BTW I get middle eastern as a result most of the time stronger than north Africa and on gedmatch its usually stronger than European.... Would you like to see the maps? On DNA.land I do get more north African but only by a slight bit. There me is 1.7% and na is 2.4% ive gotten 5/6% Anatolian 8% Palestinian on ethiohelix. And 4-6% on countless calculators on gedmatch. So I have much of my west Eurasian heritage in the spot which is pretty coincidental. Also added to when compared I am similar to the Fulani but I still will be closer much closer to eastern Bantu people. Generally speaking. I also am told by Ethiopia. Habesha that I actually look like their people. So that's a lot of coincidents there. I'm waiting on my 23andme results honestly

She's defo more Fulani influence. That's where I get it from

SWAHILLI_PRINCE16

Your North African ancestry could be from the Moors and Berbers of Mali. Id guess its most likely going to be Fulani and afro asiatic type of lineage you most likely have. Do you also get East Asian or Polynesian too? i heard that some African Americans get that due to slavery in Madagascar region...

I get almost all of my north African heritage from my mom if not all of it but more the me and east African stuff comes from my dad. According to DNA.land. I have no aka on DNA.land though. I keep being centralized on gedmatch though. I get higher me than na though. North African in the charts are like no note than 4% east Africa is anything can be around 10% of 5% or 20% or more especially with eastern Bantu populations. And me is usually higher than na. Me can be my second population at times. East asian/Polynesian occurs very low.... My mom has a very very low estimate of east Asia and I have Polynesia in ancestrydna but its so small it was only given a range but no estimate lol. Gedmatch sometimes gives results on world calculators on east asian though I also got an ambiguous result on DNA.land. I guess maybe that's how I got it.

I get Fulani on my oracles but its not like my mom's. Like I get the Fulani component too but its always with some Bantu as well... More so than my mother's she's more northwestern focus. What I don't understand is how north African ends up in a four way oracle? Wouldn't that imply being 25% na but I get so little na? That its like how is that you know?

Maybe it might come from southeast Afrian...
