I was a bit surprised, on checking the "Top 10" list below, to see that it didn't include Gene Autry's "That Silver-haired Daddy of Mine" (1932); nor even Red Sovine's popular recitation, "Giddyup Go" (1965). In the spirit of thoroughness, here are links to those two classics:

You get the drift; anyway, here is the rather more contemporary Top 10 list to which I referred:

Several of the listed pieces involve step- or adoptive fathers, or were written from a daughter's perspective. Only a few might be perceived as being about the Y-DNA lineage, as such. A few weeks ago it crossed my mind that I had written such a song, over 40 years ago, while living in Nashville. In the intervening decades I had forgotten about half of the words, but was able to find a slightly degraded reel-to-reel tape copy that I made at the time (1971). Some intrusive tape noise at the very beginning goes away soon -- sorry about that. And I used a wrong pronoun in the first verse; "him" should have been "me." But I didn't want to re-record this with the voice of an old coot. It's more of a time capsule as-is.

There's a temptation to over-introduce this sort of thing -- I already have done so -- but at a minimum I'd like to say that it was written for my first son Matt; and for this digitized posting, I've had assistance with some of the Apple technology from my second son Ben (yet unborn at the time I wrote it). Further genetic events anticipated in the lyric have satisfactorily come to pass, in the persons of my grandsons Luke, Sam, and Eli. The gratitude of the several dads involved is hereby extended to the several moms, without whose assistance, &c., &c. But this slightly maudlin relic of the Folksong Revival was always about Y-DNA, basically. I just didn't know that in 1971. Happy Father's Day, guys.
