View Full Version : Transition Update

I've now got the blue bar on signing in to 23andMe (UK user). It asks for an ethnicity survey to be completed. I'm not sure if this gives access to the New Experience any earlier.
23andMe have posted the below update. It states 'late summer' but in earlier posts, they have clarified that this means late June (let's hope it is still the same time projection).

I had one too upon login (Canadian user) and I filled out the ethnicity questionnaire. They claimed they do not use it for the ethnicity estimates at all, and it is related to info for their health report (IIRC). Didn't give me access to new experience for completing it

I've just had an e-mail come in asking me to fill in the ethnicity survey and confirm the health permissions before 22nd May, so hopefully that's when the new experience will start rolling out!

Same. Hopefully there's something in there that will be worthy of the anticipation!

same, Canada. loving it, what are your thoughts?

*sigh* ...

...regarding the interface, it seems a bit too "user friendly" in a try-hard kinda way; I don't think it's anymore intuitive than it was before. I personally prefer the first layout

I found some of the reports very valuable though, especially some of the customer database stats in comparison to your results:

◦ I can't seem to find it atm but they now show a breakdown of the most dominant admix clusters; North Western European being the highest followed by West African *if I recall correctly. Persons with a parent of significant Oceania and East-African ancestry were <1% of the 23andme database. I found this rather revealing -- if these numbers are comparable to Ancestry.com's, perhaps that would explain their lack of interest modifying their infamously erroneous ethnic cluster ("Southeastern Bantu")
◦ for beginners in genealogy, I think it's nice to know the age of your maternal haplogroup and it's ratio of occurrence in 23andme's database *makes me feel special :)
http://i.imgur.com/C5F83fc.png

I was hoping for core updates to their admixture calculator and haplogroup naming:

◦ I still have a decent chunk of broadly assigned SSA (4.1%)
◦ they could've done without displaying regions on the ancestry map for affinities at negligible levels (<0.1%); there's no way to adjust this, not even when changing the confidence level. This might seem minor but when you're excitedly showing this visual to family and friends, having to explain these inaccuracies when introducing someone to DNA testing doesn't help those already skeptical about the industry:

My Ancestry Map (I'm 99.9% SSA):
http://i.imgur.com/NdwBgpe.png
◦ it's been 2 years and they still haven't distinguished my maternal hg being L3x2b instead of L3x2 - this isn't a limitation of their technology since I had it predicted solely from 23andme's V4chip file (*thanks to Ian Logan). My paternal haplogroup is still too broad, the formed date they're proposing would be ~80,000ybp -- again, there's no limitation with the technology they're using to identify a closer haplogroup with the SNPs they've tested -- as a leader in the industry of commercial DNA testing, this is just sheer ignorance.

I'll have a look at more of the new features and reports later, so far it's very "meh" -- despite the harsh review, I'd still overall say it's better than the former version but they still have some ways to go.

Pardon the rant

It's alright. Still have ghost relatives that don't show up on my main profile, but do on my dependent. It even shows a "P" for paternal confirming that the inheritance is definitely present. It would be nice if DNA Relatives no longer had bugs/glitches from 5 years ago.

Also, the Discussion forum is terrible. No organization at all from what I can see, just an endless list of threads. I don't understand why it was downgraded.

The shared ancestry is actually a great feature. My mother's 2nd cousin who is reported I-M253 and H17 who refuses to share with me has the common ancestor with my maternal grandfather's surname based on the sharing with a third female individual who shares the same surname. (if that all makes sense)
However, due to the 2 generation gap of ambiguity of this mystery cousin, I cannot confirm if my maternal grandfather was indeed I-M253 due to the line possibly being daughtered out in that time period. It would be nice if people who paid for ancestry service, were equally prepared to share basic information as well. The section of the family definitely goes back to SE England, that much is clear.

Canada day, a month ahead! Lots to celebrate. My cousins went from 750 to 1344 overnight. Still pale in comparison to AncestryDNA where I have about 30 000, but the transition is ok. I think I found almost everything within an hour. I find there is still too many anonymous or not sharing, that might as well be anonymous...
The relatives in common feature is definitely a plus, but I miss the ability to be able to view those who share DNA five at a time. The new Haplo group nomenclature is also a plus.

I'm always completely astounded at the number of people with French Canadian heritage on ancestry... they're easily the majority of my DNA relatives there, despite it being not such a large part of my ancestry. 23andme seems to have more from the British side. I agree that it might as well be anon if they aren't sharing.

The relatives in common feature is definitely a plus, but I miss the ability to be able to view those who share DNA five at a time.
You can find that feature in the DNA tab of DNA Relatives. The primary person defaults to be yourself, but you can X yourself out and put anyone in the primary position. That lets you compare anybody to anybody (provided they are open sharing or sharing with you). This lets you develop true triangulated groups.

I finally got transitioned, (UK customer). I think the new experience is new light and from my view i wanted something new than the old outdated reports. My ancestry composition came back 95% Sub Saharan African 0.3% South Asian and 4.7% unassigned, i expected this to change!

Given that Ashkenazi is <0.1% wasn't expecting to find it in the timeline. As I know full ancestry up to 3rd gt I was surprised to get French/German -1810-1870.

Finally upgraded! My DNA matches doubled in an instant, right now most of the open sharing ones are based in the US. Hopefully that will diversify as more international users get moved over to the new system and login for the first time.

Also, my ancestry composition has been altered very slightly. My top three results have increased by between 0.6 and 1.3%, apparently at the expense of broadly Northwestern European. Good stuff.

My ancestry composition changed ever so slightly as well. My unassigned dropped a bit and went on to my B&I and French&German. My matches have gone up from about 800 to 1261.

It's been a bit like waiting to try a dish with a few ingredients you haven't had before, only to find when you get the dish it's rather bland.

Haplogroup assignments still leave a lot to be desired. Mtdna is still showing as H but FTDNA has me as H67. Ydna now has me as E-V13 but with FTDNA I have gone from that to E-L17 then to E-BY5219. Yfull has me as E-Z16664.

Stephen1986

I was transitioned overnight, some of the changes -

yDNA - The haplogroup for my brother and myself has changed to P-109.

DNAR - My DNAR matches have gone from 1330 to 1840, and my brother's matches have gone from 1191 to 1715 matches.

Neanderthal - My Neanderthal has gone from 2.6% to 324 variants (more than 97% of 23andMe customers), whilst my brother has gone from 2.5% to 277 variants (less than 52% of 23andMe customers).

Changes in AC -

For myself -

My British and Irish has gone from 70.5% to 71.8%.
My French and German has gone from 6.1% to 6.3%.
My Scandinavian remains at 1.9%.
My Broadly Northwestern European has fallen from 20.3% to 18.9%.
My Broadly European has fallen from 1.2% to 1.1%.

16858

For my brother -

His British and Irish has gone from 70.8% to 71.3%.
His French and German has gone from 5.1% to 5.4%.
His Scandinavian has gone from 0.7% to 0.9%.
His Broadly Northwestern European has fallen from 20.5% to 19.5%.
His Iberian remains at 0.2%.
His Broadly Southern European has gone from 1.0% to 1.3%.
His Broadly European has fallen from 1.4% to 1.1%.
His North African has fallen from 0.1% to <0.1%.
His East Asian remains at <0.1%.
His Broadly East Asian and Native American remains at <0.1%.
His Unassigned remains at 0.2%.
