If I'm reading the abstract correctly ( not gone beyond the pay wall) it appears to suggest that distinct dog types had been bred 9,000 years ago suggesting a fairly advanced process of dog domestication and evolution through human breeding choices :-
"We also show that a sled dog and hunting dog standard existed, which significantly changes the current ideas about the timing of specialized dog breed formation via directed selection. "
It doesn't surprise me, in that I have a gut feeling that the relationship between dogs and people goes back further, possibly much further, than previously thought. John
