West Asian
The people of modern-day Iran and Turkey trace their genetic heritage to the ancient Persians and the Turkic ethnic people, respectively. The ancient Persians were nomads who entered the region in the 10th century BCE, while Turkey was home to early hunter-gatherers in its prehistory and was eventually Hellenized by Alexander the Great. The predominant cultures and languages of Western Asia are Persian, Turkic, and Arabic and its largest religious groups are Shia and Sunni Islam with religious and ethno-religious minorities such as Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians, and Baha'is also present. The Persian rug is a well-known component of local culture; Iranians were the earliest people in history to weave carpets and today produce more rugs and carpets than the rest of the world put together. Many historians also link the advent of human rights to this region, with the Cyrus Cylinder of the Achaemenid Persian Empire often referred to as the worlds oldest declaration of universal human rights.
Greek
Since ancient times, the Greek people have largely remained in the Greek peninsula, centered around the Aegean and Ionian Seas, with cosmopolitan hubs historically in Athens, Thessalonica, Alexandria, and eventually Constantinople. In modernity, however, ethnic Greeks may also be found in Cyprus, the Caucasus, southern Russia, and southern Italy - perhaps the first place the Greeks moved, considering that their presence in Italy goes back to the 8th century BCE. Greek culture and even Greek identity have dominated Western civilization for centuries, in part because of Alexander the Greats conquest of much of the ancient world, and his introduction of Greek culture everywhere he conquered. Indeed, the great philosophers hail from ancient Greece (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle), as do the giants of ancient literature (Homer, Sophocles), and of mathematics (Pythagoras, Euclid, Archimedes). The ancient Greeks also made significant contributions to the arts, exploration, politics, architecture, music, science, sports - the list goes on and on.
Central Asian
Central Asian people trace their origins to the nomadic ethnic groups who roamed the steppes of Central Asia along the Silk Road trade route between Europe and Asia. The Huns and Mongols (with their infamous leader Genghis Khan) swept over the desert landscape of northern Central Asia to conquer new territory and expand their respective empires. Later Turkic cultures dominated in the north of the region, while Persian-influenced cultures exerted power over the south, including modern-day Afghanistan. Due to the arid conditions of the steppe, few permanent cities were established in the region in ancient times, and instead a nomadic horse culture continued to dominate for millennia. Traditional nomadic Kazakhs continue to live in yurts, raise domesticated eagles for hunting, and combine traditional shamanistic beliefs with the practice of Islam.
