I emailed Dr. Doug McDonald for his comments as well:

I find it hard to believe that 23andme can get it so wrong! That’s AMAZING!

Most likely fit is 100% A-Ethiopian (East African)
which is 100% total Africa

The location error = 0.005792 with 1 group

The following are possible populations,
most likely at the top:

The following are possible population sets and their fractions,
most likely at the top

A-Ethiop= 1.000

That’s Amhara, but it could be also Tigray.
Oromo is unlikely.

The American on the chromosomes looks like noise, while the
Euro looks more actually possible .... but in East Africa sometimes
Euro appears for no known reason. Of course if you are in fact
of long-standing American location, they could possibly be real.

Doug McDonald

So, only Amhara came up as a possible population? Not even Tigray or Oromo?

Tigray comes up as a near second-best, fairly close and just out the tolerance level to make it appear in the list. Oromo is next ... but way, way behind in the fit sweepstakes.

Cool. It's interesting how this "Asian" component seems so strong in East Africans. I am guessing it more reflects the early isolation of Asians who retained some East African-specific genes rather than reverse migration from Asia to Africa.
