I just found a paper trail to a potential ancestor who's last name is Jahan. I still need to see if I can find info about where she was born but in the meantime I thought I would ask if this name is more common in certain populations in India?

Sounds like a muslim surname. Could be from anywhere in the sub continent.

Guess that won't narrow things down then! Thanks.

There are two surnames: Jehan (European Origin, maybe French) and Jahan (Persian or Turkish origin).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jahan_(name)

Couldn't find more than this.

The first is only for given names, so that wouldn't apply here. It's interesting though that Jahan as a surname is slightly more prevelant in France compared to other European countries. But it doesn't seem to show up as a French last name.

I was looking to India because I've found a likely distant relative (he and a distant cousin of his form a triangulation group with me on two segments) They are both Jatt as I understand it.

The first jatts came to canada was during 1900s. They landed in Vancouver and that's where they stayed. So I doubt you've a jatt ancestor. Keep in mind they were farmers and very conservative, so marrying outside in 1900s is close to impossible.

Jahan sounds Persian.

The last name is probably the person's father's or grandfather's first name, not their surname/tribe. ie. Muhammad Jahan is probably Muhammad son of Jahan, not of the clan/tribe/caste of Jahan. It could be from anywhere. Among Muslims in South Asia, the name Jahangir (Conqueror of the World) is more popular than Jahan (World/Universe).

It's a given name in Persian and Turkish as well as a few other languages.

They're distant cousins. He doesn't have a Jatt ancestor.

It is useful info though, since I had a colleague of mine who is from India tell me the Jatt had started immigrating to Canada a lot earlier than that time frame. If that isn't the case and intermarriages were unlikely then yes, the common ancestor wouldn't be Jatt.

I asked a French colleague of mine just to check if Jahan is just an unusual French surname. He said no, he's never heard of it. I found a few other records from the same resource that also had a Jahan surname, so maybe less likely to be a typo.

The Jahan surname has its highest frequency in Bangladesh and is common in India aswell, especially in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarkhand.
