I tested with 23andme, and Ancestry. 23andme gave me 57% British and Irish and around 10% French and German...however Ancestry gave me 7% Irish 38% Great Britain and 45% Europe West. My dad always told me I was mostly Scottish. We have a lot of Scottish surnames in my family. I do have Dutch from my moms side so I do have Germanic ancestry but I am wondering why such a huge gap between the two tests?

What was your Broadly Northwestern score on 23andMe? If you add that to your British and Irish and French and German on 23andMe it is probably similar to the other 3 categories on Ancestry.

In my experience people with ancestors from southern England, northern France, and the Low Countries get higher Europe West scores on Ancestry because the reference populations tend to peak near the Netherlands.

On 23andMe people from these areas get higher British and Irish because the French and German region tends to peak in Switzerland.

What I’ve realized is that the names of the regions on these tests are not relevant. What is relevant is how you compare to their reference samples for these regions. Using a label like “Germanic” is not really that relevant either.

My ancestors are from northern France and Belgium. I get high amounts of British Isles not because I have many ancestors from those nationalistic borders but because from a genetics point of view I am almost as closely related to them as I am to the Swiss reference samples in the French and German category. If you look at a map of Europe this makes sense as well. Ignoring borders northern France and Belgium are almost equidistant to the British Isles and Switzerland.

I got my autosomal test done with Ancestry. they say that they go back thousands of years...
63% Great Britain (according to Ancestry this is more than the average person actually living in England btw). LOL.
27% Western Europe,
5% Scandinavian,
2% Italian,
2% Caucuses,
less than 1% Iberian,
less than 1% Eastern European,

All I could think of when this came in was WTF? Ancestry must be slanted quite a bit towards the UK region.....basically dismissing any trace of Asia Minor and scarcely recognizing Italy or southeast Europe.....so I loaded the raw data to GEDmatch and several calculators gave me what I knew to be more accurate, even the Northern/Western slanted Eurogenes and its Jtest seemed to be closer. not using the oracle 4 because anything less than its 25% measurement might not be accurately reflected and pigeon holed into something close by....

basically all these tests need to be taken with a grain of salt especially if you are mixed heavily one way or the other as the smaller percentages tend to get underrepresented....
