We have a new Italian R-L21 today: Bigazzi, kit 267719, whose ancestor came from Certignano, south of Florence.

He has no matches in FTDNA's database at either 67 or 37 markers.

Not far from where a recent study showed an unexpected concentration of L21 in Italy.

Interesting! Is he on Ysearch? It might not be easy to bet on his final haplogroup!

I think we will see more and more L21+ people in Europe in the coming next months bringing new SNPs for sure :-)

Yes, and it is interesting that he has no haplotype neighbors in FTDNA's database. Gioiello commented on this one over at World Families, and even he couldn't find a match for him. He thinks the haplotype may point to an Italian origin for L21 (if I am reading him rightly). I think it points to a Gallic tribe, but that's me.

Ysearch X5562.

He does have a DF21+>L1336+ at 12 away at 67 markers (McLaughlin, kit 149586). That's not close, but it's not too far off, either.

Certignano seems to be on the border of what was the Kingdom of Sicily around 1150. Back then, it was under Norman rule. As the Normans were known to conquest then integrate, it could well be descendants from the Norman invasion, couldn't it?

Definitely a possibility. Gioiello says Bigazzi is a fairly common surname in Tuscany.

I think this Italian L21+ needs to go for DF13 next just because of his unusual STRs.

His 436=10 is -2 the L21 modal and 436 is very, very slow. His next slowest off-modal is 459=9,9.

Ironically, RMS, there is one other person that matches these two off-modals and that guy is an DF41 "suspect." However, the GDs are so great I'd be quite surprised if he came out DF41.

I think there is half a chance he'll be DF13-, or if not that DF13* with outside shots at DF41, Z253 and DF49. You never know, but some of the others are not out of the running.

L-21 is founded in some part of south Italy under the norman rule and especially in Sicily, so i think it's possible.

you can drill down into gens, like cognomix, but cognomix can drill another level lower into the town level
