View Full Version : Could you predict a SNP branch by Y12 matches map?

It might be a tricky question, but very often it is possible to predict someone's downstream SNP by looking at their match list and the map.

In this situation, my relative, I have tested him for Y-12

Out of the matches:

19 are Z283
8 are Z92
4 are Z93
4 are YP682
5 are YP5905 + 1 YP5906 + 1 YP5917
2 are CTS3402
2 are BY27595
2 are YP578
2 are Z280

What is the branch I might be certain he belongs to?

Thanks in advance

I would hazard a guess at Z92, but it’s just a guess, other people here would advise you much better.

I am planning to order an SNP pack for my great uncle. I cannot do YSEQ as he is not alive anymore.

Budget is limited too. Options include:

R1a - Backbone SNP Pack
R1a - Z280 SNP Pack
R1a - Z284 SNP Pack
R1a - Z93 SNP Pack
37-market STR

I am inclined to believe that Z280 is the most likely thing, judging by his matches and general tendency of people from Ukraine to be Z280

Please advice me

Did you post the 12 markers in another thread, and I missed it or forgot? Or is the kit in the R1a Project?

I posted my uncle's result, which is R1b. This is my great-uncle's result, he is R1a (M198). STR 12:

DYS393
DYS390
DYS19
DYS391
DYS385
DYS426
DYS388
DYS439
DYS389I

Strangely he has only 3 full matches on 12 markers and a handful of 1-step. I was of impression R1a and R1b are so populated, but...

DYS391 = 12 is an off modal and most likely doesn't match most of the 12-str matches in any database for both R1a and R1b. Moreover, not every family line is a super breeder, many of the lines just die out or have few close matches.

All three of his exact matches have tested SNPs, at least to a minimal extent:

1) R-Z280 of Belarusian patrilineage. He probably didn't test any farther than that level.

2) R-YP335 of German patrilineage. Big Y result.

3) R-BY32495, a small subclade in the Z93 branch. Big Y result. The other known member of R-BY32495 is from Kuwait.

I'd say that the R1a-Z280 SNP Pack is a pretty safe bet.

Hello!

The guess on the SNP pack was right. Results came in:

R-YP1696

Legend was that the ancestor by this line came to the village from Croatia during Napoleonic wars. At least surname supported such a theory. But what really is the origin of this clade? Closest matches are Belarusians.
