My grandfather took a FTDNA test a couple of years back and sent me some info on his haplogroup and he got i1-M227 .

i did some research on it and its very interesting since its not found in scandinavia what so ever , and occurs at very low frequencies around continental europe , does this mean its from pre-germanic migrations?

Here is a post from someone from Eupedia - I1a1 has never been reported in Scandnavia it only exists in Urlaic and Slavic speakers in eastern Europe, Baltics, Poland, Beluras, Switzerland, France, southwest England, and Turkey at about 1%.

The ancestor where i get my surname and haplogroup from was born in switzerland .

M227 is downstream and part of the larger I-Z2336 tree. According to YFull there are two samples of it with one individual from Finland and another from Lithuania.

However there are yet more SNPs downstream of M227 found in Denmark, Belarus, Russia, Sweden and even Palestine.

I-M227 is still a rather old haplogroup and probably still has a connection to Germanic tribal movements to some degree. But haplogroups don't equal ethnicity.

Hi SaltyShanker!

My name is Kirill, I am the administrator of S4795 project at FTDNA. I am also a M227 carrier and have been investigating my group for years. I thought that I knew each and every M227 tested via FTDNA, but I must have been wrong.

Could you let me know your grandfather's kit number and/or add his kit to the project for me to see your haplotype and make a prediction on what sub-branch downstream from M227 your grandfather belong to?

I'm glad to find another "cousin". I'm also very likely to have answers to most of your questions regarding M227 group. It does have Scandinavian origin and there are quite a few Danish/Swedish members (but not Norwegian).

Please do not hesitate to ask questions if you have any.

Regards,
Kirill Prokopyuk (I1-M227)
