Every third or fourth time I click on a link, I get the following error message:

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator at [email protected] to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

That's been happening to me as well, on-and-off, over the past few weeks. Not consistently-- some days are worse than others-- but it is increasingly becoming a part of my normal experience of Anthrogenica.

Happened just now as I tried to read this thread. Second try brought the thread up.

Coming onto the site about 20 minutes ago brought up the text without any formatting.
Coming in a second time, formatting engaged and appearance was normal.

That server error was happening almost every other thread click this morning.
More than ever before, but it is a little earlier in the day that I am online and there are currently 706 people on the site.
Server error seems worst after reversing out of one thread and then clicking on another. (Ongoing observation)

The site is excruciatingly slow. Quite often pages do not complete loading, and CSS formatting is not applied to the layout.

Anthrogenica.com appears to be hosted on a shared server. You can get really cheap virtual private servers these days.......

Ditto.

Ditto, ditto.

As Mike said above, it happens every once and a while. Usually, I just back page and reload and it works as usual.

I seem to be getting this daily, but also sometimes if I refresh the page it'll go all askew and weirdly shaped, completely disfigured.

Same for me. Seems like every other link I try gives me the server error.

Me too. Got it when trying to open this thread. Also couldn't add "thanks" on another one just now

[ADMIN]

Apologies to all for addressing this thread later rather than sooner. We have been investigating the source of the frequent Error 500 messages for the past several months behind the scenes.

We can assure our regulars that the frequent error messages are not being caused by anything malicious. We have identified the cause (residual and apparently benign fault following our upgrades in Dec 2017) and are working to resolve it within the next few weeks.

Until then, any downtime experienced by the forum is to be expected and unlikely to last for more than several hours. If we are expecting a period of downtime greater than this, we will inform our community ahead of time.

Thank you all for your continued patience. Thread closed.
