Hi! I am a Bengali Brahmin. I recently got my 23andme results back and uploaded them to Gedmatch. I got 100% South Asian, and <0.1% Broadly East Asian. However, I had around 100 European DNA matches so I was interested. I uploaded to Gedmatch, but since I am new I don't know what my results actually mean and how they compare to other Bengali Brahmins. They appear to show some kind of European. Is that of any significance?

Can you post your Harappa results as well?

Also don't worry about getting European matches on gedmatch, it's the shared steppe and Neolithic farmer ancestry that gives us matches from Europe and West Asia.

I also had European matches on 23andme if that matters. The biggest was 17cM I believe. Most of my Indian relatives get some European if that matters.

We all get them on gedmatch, it's pretty normal. Like I said it is shared ancient ancestry like steppe and Neolithic farmers with Europeans.

These are my harrapa results for e.g., I score more euro than you and no I don't have any euro ancestry. Your Euro is very ancient which came via steppe population migranting to South Asia 3000-4000 years ago.

Yeah it looks more or less like a Bengali Brahmins results with higher south Indian, lower Baloch+Caucasian and higher NE Euro+Med than the HAP average for Bengali Brahmins:

S Indian 41%
Baloch 33%
Caucasian 5%
NE Euro 10%
SE Asian 2%
Siberian 1%
NE Asian 2%
Papuan 1%
American 1%
Beringian 1%
Mediterranean 2%
SW Asian 0%
San 0%
E African 0%
Pygmy 0%
W African 0%

The Bengali Brahmins seem to be the result of high steppe Indo-Aryans (Saraswat Brahmins?) mixing with low Baloch/Caucasian high SI/SE Asian East Indians from the area

First, 23andMe uses Afghans Indians and some other S Asian references who are themselves E Asian admixed. That’s why you’ll hardly see anyone with a 90% + S Asian score score any E Asian. E Asian is hidden in the S Asian references who are themselves E Eurasian admixed. Their W Asian references tend to have less E Asian substructure, thus there is a higher chance of scoring E Asian if they show you predominantly W Asian.

For example, I score more E Asian than most S Asians on 23andMe, even though in reality I’m about as E Asian admixed as a few of the S Asians, reason being is that 23 has me modeled as less than 50% S Asian.

They also use smoothing in their 100 bp haplotype windows to get rid of minor admixture.

with regards to getting alot of European matches, everyone does, its more ancient, and the big reason is that there are many more European testers than Asian ones. As more Asians start testing, you’ll see the % of Asian matches go up drastically

Bengali Brahmins are Kanyakubja Brahmins, not Saraswat Brahmins, so their earliest ancestral location is in and around Kanauj in Northwestern Uttar Pradesh.

Yeah, I'm a Kulin Brahmin so I know we came to Bengal from Kannauj.
