I have to plead ignorance as far as haplogroups go. I understand that the mtDNA is passed through your maternal line, but other than that I don't much know what they show or what any of them mean.

I just got back my LivingDNA results today and I was assigned haplogroup V with subclade V3c.
Based on the info LivingDNA gives it's present in people in Scandinavia, but I'm having a hard time understanding much else.

Could someone help better explain this to me?

Thanks!!

Eupedia is always my first source for mtDNA too.

You also might want to check out the results here: https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/mtdnahaplogroupv/dna-results, along with the Facebook page it references and the links.

mtDNA mutates so slowly and unlike the male line doesn't have the benefit of being linked to surnames (as Y-DNA can be), so it's not that useful for genealogy, of course, but I think it's interesting nonetheless and like the idea of being able to track not only the movements of the initial V or K or J women, but also to studies being able to drill down more on some of the subgroups, which developed more recently. It can also be used to support or rule out connections if you happen to have a question on your mt line.

Check the mtDNA threads here too. Not that active, but it looks like there are some other V3 people.

Iíve been checking it out a bit, thank you for the suggestion! It is very interesting, probably not something Iíd pay for separately but that it came with the LivingDNA test itís a nice little perk and something new to look into.
