Checked my myheritage account today and noticed a new layout and new filters.

You can now use new ethnicity filters. For example I have 447 who share Iberian ethnicity, another 304 Eastern European etc.

The country data is quite useless, as it is not based on ancestry but residence. Furthermore about 50% of my matches do not have a country of residence listed and so are not included..

That's good to know, but oddly enough at least one of my ethnicities doesn't appear in the filter. MyHeritage shows 1.6% Native American for me and 0.7% Central American. I can filter using "Central American", but not "Native American".

In addition, when I do filter on "Central American", the relatives who appear seem to be in the order of their percentage of Central American. But someone who is, say, 50% Central American probably inherited that mainly from the opposite side. I'd rather see people listed by how much DNA they share with me. It's much more likely that people descended from the same Native American ancestors I am will have similar low percentages. Our Native American ancestors did not go on to have fully Native American children, after all; they were all admixed.

Going in the opposite direction -- looking up close relatives first, then seeing what ancestries we share -- has actually been more useful. For example, I have a half 2nd cousin at MyHeritage. She and I share a great grandmother, but not a great grandfather. Our great grandmother had a documented Native American ancestor, and both my cousin and I show a small amount of "Central American". My cousin shows slightly more than I do -- 1.0% for her versus 0.7% for me -- but she does not show any percentage of "Native American" (even though both categories actually are Native American).

One thing that's different for my cousin is that she's descended from our great grandmother's first husband, who was also our great grandmother's 2nd cousin. The two of them are both descended from the Native American ancestor, giving my cousin another line of descent from that ancestor.

On the other hand, I also have fairly well-established Native American ancestry through my maternal grandfather, to whom my 2nd cousin isn't related. I have cousins who are related to me through my grandfather that have one or both of "Native American" or "Central American" as a shared ancestry, but at similar low amounts.

If I filter on "Central American", I could probably eventually find a number of them, but likely after wading through a lot of relatives with more Central American but from a completely different source. And, I can't search by "Native American", so I wouldn't pick up anyone who shows some percentage of "Native American" but no "Central American".

I'm a bit puzzled as to why the "Native American" category was omitted from the filter, but that appears to be the case.

EDIT: I also show a slight anomaly in "shared ethnicity". I uploaded three different DNA files to MyHeritage, so I actually have results based on: (1) a 23andMe file; (2) an FTDNA file; and (3) an Ancestry file. These results are not far apart, but I'd have thought that MyHeritage would always use the same one for comparison purposes. They don't, so sometimes my "Central American" is shown as the same as my 2nd cousin's -- 1.0% -- while another time it's shown as only 0.7%. In the comparison with my 2nd cousin, that's the figure that's used for me.

Here's how MyHeritage shows this ancestry for the three different files. 23andMe: America 2.3%; Native American 1.6%; Central American 0.7%. Ancestry: America 2.5%; Native American 1.5%; Central American 1.0%. FTDNA: America 1.7%; Native American 1.7%.

Again, in comparisons with cousins it appears that sometimes one result is used, sometimes another.

It's the same with my aunt, she gets 0,7% Nepali, but cannot use Nepali in the filter (it is noise though)... I am guessing their estimations will get an update soon, hence why the filter does not include everything...

Not being able to use Native American in the filter is odd.

You don't have to get an ethnicity to be able to use it, I have the option to use most of the ethnicities, most of which I do not get. I tried Eskimo/Inuit and got 1 match (who is only a trace percentage). But like others I didn't have Native American come up. (None of the kits I control get Native American at MyHeritage, but again that shouldn't matter.)

I hope that's it. My Native American percentage is pretty small, but it also very consistent and it shows up in numerous relatives about the way I'd expect. (With lots of us having a similar low level and the same Native American ancestor(s).)

Yes, I think it was a good move by MyHeritage to do it this way. For one thing, suppose someone expects a small percentage of some ethnicity and they don't see it. It could be because they're mistaken about their ancestry, but it could also be just because of the generational distance and "luck of the draw".

Being able to search on an ethnicity you don't have means you might be able to find relatives who do, though of course you then have the task of trying to figure out if it's from the same side or not. But at least you have a place to start.
