Hello everyone.

I was wondering if anyone could give me any information on this particular haplogroup, as I really can't find much of anything online. The short backstory: I'm adopted and interested in my genetic history, especially ancient genetics or as far back as we can accurately go... Anyway, I uploaded my 23andme info to the James Lick mtDNA page and got the following results:

Anybody? I've looked for H18 in academic papers, but really couldn't find anything except a few scant mentions.

I see that there is one person with H18b in The Mitochondrial DNA Haplogroup H & HV Project of FTDNA. The earliest known ancestor is from NW Portugal, near Porto.

Hi Jeff,
I have H18 from 23and me data, which is supposedly 1 in 1400 in that database. I just ran the James Lick program, turns out I lack the marker for H18b. I agree these are hard to find. I have seen a higher incidence of H18 or H18b, can't remember which, in a paper contrasting Huelva and Cordoba in Andalusia. Also was present among the Quashquais, versus Persians and Azeris in Iran. Also a person on another blog showed 4% H18 among somebody's sample of 100 Balkan Turks. I have the extras markers 2393T and 8277I (16519C). I suspect H18 and H18b will show up in small specific pockets of population as time goes by. If I come across the references again I will post.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3828245/ This paper contains a chart showing Qashquai people have % of of H18b (scroll down). If you research the group, you can also see that there are Arabs shepherding tribes in the area that live near/among them. This paper was published before the H18b subclade was identified separately from H18, which found it in the Arabian peninsula and one person in Syria. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5437654/ the paper about two populations in Andalusia. The spreadsheet you can click at the very end, has six individuals with H18 haplogroup assignment, I would not rule out that some or all could be 18b as I can't see any mention of the marker that's used to distinguish them, which is of recent use. Of course none of this gives me any idea how it connects with my very northern European heritage, other than they think Iberian folk were a large portion of those who populated the British Isles.
