Hi everyone
I'm living in France and just starting in genetic genealogy, my Y-DNA is R1b-U106>Z381>Z156.
I hope I will read and learn a lot here !

Hello and welcome to the forum! This is a great place for all things DNA related - especially ancient DNA ;-). Also, welcome to the Z156 group under U106 - I am also U106>Z381>Z156 and the additional SNPs you can see in my signature etc...

If you don't mind me asking, who did you test with and what test did you take? I ask because there are some major sub groups under Z156 - First there is the Z306/Z304 group and some smaller sub groups, then under Z304 there is both DF96 and DF98 (I am positive for DF98)... and some smaller sub groups... with enough testing you can discover if you are positive for them... but it depends on what tests you have taken :-)!

Don't be a stranger - because we need more testers from continental European countries like France and Germany!

I received my test last week from LDNA, the test was for myself. When I look at my Y-DNA data the next clade (?) after Z156 is S349.1, then S484/Z48. I'm just beginning my researches si I've no idea of what it means ... I discovered that another person on anthro had exactly the same results than me, from AM01921.2/S475.2/Z2983.2 down to Z40395, does it mean that we are cousins ? I 'm born and living in Lyon, France and both my father's and mother's surname seems to be germanic

I would go join the U106 DNA forum at yahoo as Wing Genealogist suggested early in this thread as all the experts are there and can give great testing advice. As far as those SNPs (that is what we call the Y-DNA markers like Z156) under Z156 - I am not familiar with them so they might be older SNPs than Z156 - go ahead and send an e-mail to [email protected] we discuss U106 there! Let me know then if you have any trouble ok! I have a friend/kinsman from France who is also Z156 and I am friends with him on facebook... would you like me to see if he is ok with me sending your his contact/e-mail info?

Additionally do you have a list of the SNPs that LDNA found you positive for other than U106, Z381, and Z156?

Here is a list of the SNPs I'm positive for from my testing at Family Tree DNA (I've taken the Big Y which is the a "SNP discovery" test that helped discover a lot of newer SNPs under the older, larger groups like U106 and some of it's subgroups)... I am no expert on the older SNPs leading back to our VERY old ancestor R (under him would have come R1 and then R1a and R1b - we are under R1b and then the U106 group etc)... but I am very familiar with U106 and especially Z156 and sub groups as that is my group also!

I would imagine we share a lot of these as these are mostly ancestral (came before) U106 - we are most interested in the SNPs under U106 such as Z156 and what is under that... if you go to this site the U106 DNA project https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/u106/dna-results and follow the SNP listings (I think Z156 cluster is listed on either page 5 or 6) and then under that heading you will see the breakdown of the sub groups - if that makes sense let me know... I am kit 284744 in the DNA project and under DF98 etc... the reason we are more interested in the SNP Z156 and any "newer" SNPs is because that it getting us into the Bronze Age and closer to 0AD as you move "down" the branching of the U106 tree ;-). For instance - our resident DF98 expert and dating expert Dr. Iain McDonald (who is also a member of my DF98 group) has dated the SNP Z156 to about 3000 BC - though this may or may not have changed recently as he continues to improve his dating method... that should put it in perspective as far as dating. When you join the yahoo forum - you will occasionally see dating that Dr. Iain puts out as a message if you check often enough ;-).

As you find more people that you match at SNPs (if you have taken enough testing like the Big Y) then you find more "recent" matches and that helps branch out and build your tree under Z156 etc... but first you need the testing and also to be lucky enough to have the right matches (which will come in time if you don't right now - no worries) you can see how it happens by looking in the U106 DNA project link - for instance you can see Z156 as a base group, and then as you follow the listings under that you can see it broken down into groups "under" Z156... let me know if that makes sense after you take a look at the U106 DNA project...

Additionally I sent a message to my French friend on facebook who is Z156+... awaiting his response, but I'm sure he'll say it's ok to give you his e-mail info!!!

A False Positive is a result which conflicts with your Haplogroup assignment. It is highly likely the result is an error.

These type of DNA tests are not 100% accurate. I don't know the error rate off-hand, but I believe it is in the range of 1-5% or so. I counted 19 false positives in 393 results. A False Positive is a result which conflicts with your Haplogroup assignment. It is highly likely the result is an error.

These type of DNA tests are not 100% accurate. I don't know the error rate off-hand, but I believe it is in the range of 1-5% or so. I counted 19 false positives in 393 results. Wing Genealogist - do you think Magister would benefit from taking a Z156 SNP panel test at FTDNA? I know that test only looks for known SNPs discovered in Big Y... but Big Y being expensive I usually suggest a cheaper one first, but often explain that Big Y is the best bang for your buck in the long term as it sets you up with your personal variants that in the future someone who is positive for one or more - help create branching in your section of the U106 tree etc... in Magister's case it would be at the Z156 level and below... i guess in other words I'm asking what would be the best bet for him other than the Big Y. Of course Big Y is an option, but expensive.

A NGS/WGS (Next Generation Sequence/Whole Genome Sequence) test such as FTDNA's Big Y or Full Genome's tests are the "Gold Standard". They give the fullest results and (in general) would be the last Y-DNA test anyone would really need to take. However (as you have stated) cost is always a consideration. These tests are are in the range of (I believe) roughly 500 Euros (and more), and as such, they tend to be too high a price many folks are willing/able to pay.

Autosomal tests, such as the Living DNA test, 23andMe, etc. give only VERY limited Y-DNA results. FTDNA's SNP Panel tests do provide a level of Y-SNP testing which refines their haplogroup at a much more reasonable cost (I believe the cost would be roughly 100 Euros). However, I cannot recall if FTDNA still offers a single Z156 SNP Pack test, or whether it has been broken up into three packs (DF96, DF98, and negative for both). I have privately emailed our Z156 Guru (Dr. Iain McDonald) and asked him about this. I will post his response (or he will) when I receive it.

I have heard back from Dr. McDonald.

FTDNA no longer has a Z156 SNP Pack test. It is divided up into three SNP Packs (as I mentioned before) DF96, DF98 & negative for these two).

The options are to either SNP test for DF96 and/or DF98 then take the appropriate SNP Pack test or to take the R1b-U106 Superclade Panel Test (about 100 Euros) from http://www.yseq.net/
