Decades ago I also hunted for cactus species to plant on the sunny side of our duplex on Fort Huachuca, along with interesting rock specimens. Unfortunately, we had to abandon our little cactus garden when I received orders for Germany. One of those rocks was probably valuable, and maybe I should have brought it back to my mother's for safe keeping, It was red Jasper, the semi-precious stone used in jewelry. I found that down where Arizona and New Mexico meet Mexico (private property, I think). The outer layer was weathered crust and not noticeable. But someone(s) had been there before me, and it aroused my curiosity, etc. All of this was secondary to bird watching.
