Hi, I am new here so may ask naive questions, sorry! :) Okay, so my maternal grandfather's side are Armenian, but I strongly suspect they are ethnic Zaza Kurds. My greatgreatgrandfather was born in a village between Erzurum and Xinus, and I know they changed their name when they moved out of that area. Now the challenge is that I am mixed (have Greek, Russian, some Finnish ancestry on my Russian side, so a melting pot really :). Is there a way to find out the ethnicity of a specific branch of my family? I got tested on 23andme and so did my Mom.

Hi,

Have you uploaded the raw datas of yours and your mom onto Gedmatch? If you have done so, would you post the results of Eurogenes K36 and MDLP K23b? Also post the result of Dodecad K12b with the oracle results. Let's see what they say.

If it is Zaza you will have a lot of turkish hits in one-to-many search in gedmatch, whereas you will have a lot of armenian hits if it is armenian.

Hi Eolien, thank you for your reply. I ran one-to-many and am getting hits from all over the place. Also Turkish, but a lot of Finns, Poles, Russians, Lithuanians, you name it (I mentioned that I am heavily mixed with a lot of confirmed Eastern European and some Finnish ancestry). So it's complicated. Any way to untangle this mess?

Hi Iris,

Thank you for posting your results. I am checking the South Central Asian component of your and your mom's Eurogenes K36. This is a marker of Iranic people, which Zazas are part of. IMHO, it does not suggest any Kurdish ancestor. More knowledgeable members might further comment on it.

Hi Lupus,
Thank you for analyzing it.

Hi Iris,

It's been a while since your last post but I just wanted to comment anyway.
Since your raw data is from 23andme, I believe you will not be able to load it to regular Gedmatch. Instead you are suppose to be using Genesis. And I suppose the admixture results from the calculators are from Genesis.

As your ancestry is divided between several irrelevant parties, I do not think Admixture will effectively help.

The way to inspect whether you have Zaza or Armenian ancestry is to go with the matches.

Even if you achieve to find out some Zaza matches that will confirm your Zaza ancestry, you will see that Zaza's commonly have at least a few Armenian matches as well.

Before the autosomal test result I did not know any ancestry from Dersim region. And now I do know that both my parents have ancestry from Dersim, and specifically at some segment on my 8th chromosome. I have may be twenty Zaza matches.

I think you should definitely load your data to MyHeritage as well. Because Genesis is still not mature and stable when it comes to matches. If you were able to load your data to Gedmatch, I could have guess whether your matches from Anatolia has Zaza ancestry or not. But Genesis is still quite weak in terms of database.

Still you can PM me your kit number, or write down here. I can look it up for you. But again, load your data to MyHeritage while it's free.
One quick reminder, the Turkish names you see within the list of your matches, they might be Turkish, Kurdish, Zaza or more likely mix of all three.

Hi Alhan,
Thank you so much for your reply. I am a rookie when it comes to ancestry DNA research, but I have suspected all along that having ancestry all over the map might obscure individual admixture.
So I heeded your advice and tried uploading my raw data on MyHeritage, but hit a snag. It appears those resident in Poland (this is where I live) are restricted from participating in DNA research on the site. That's a bummer.
Do you mind if I PM you my Genesis kit #?
Thank you so much once again.
