View Full Version : Recent Downtime: Summary of Events (24th Oct - 2nd Nov 2018)

Dear Regulars,

Per this post I've just made (https://anthrogenica.com/showthread.php?15677-Still-there-are-huge-problem-with-forum-accessibility-solution&p=512986&viewfull=1#post512986), for those interested, please find a general summary of the reason for our recent downtime in this thread.

Anthrogenica experienced an unprecedented wave of organic traffic in the week beginning 15th October 2018. This was superimposed on our continuously increasing traffic volume since launch (our rate of growth continues to increase over six years on). Due the latter, the administrators had planned a server migration several months prior. Clearly, the time was right to shift over to a more suitable server.

On Tuesday 16th October, we announced that the forum will experience some downtime (https://anthrogenica.com/showthread.php?15661-Anticipated-Downtime-Notice-(Tues-16th-Oct-18)) while we undertook the above. Several of the admins (including myself) personally undertook this.

On Monday 22nd October, the site returned online and many members were able to access it. Site inaccessibility at this time was due to DNS propagation lag, a standard (and temporary) problem following host or server migration.

By Wednesday 24th October, access to the site was globally restricted. Several of us worked behind the scenes near-constantly to establish what the problem was. No clear culprit was found, despite a methodological analysis of the problem, until Wednesday 31st October. An incompatibility between our new server and some of our previous custom settings (including plugins) was the cause. To address the problem as efficiently as possible, we liaised with an independent web developer, who satisfactorily fixed the issue after several days of work.

Anthrogenica is now running smoothly with full functionality. We thank all our regulars for their continued patience. However, we'd like to specifically thank those members who have financially contributed to the site's upkeep through either our "Subscription" class feature or donations. These went directly towards shifting us to a more spacious server, hiring a professional to work on our site, and for the maintenance costs we currently have, which include security oversight. Your contributions made it possible for us to get the work done.

If you would like to contribute to the site's upkeep and haven't done so already, please refer to this thread outlining our sustainability model (https://anthrogenica.com/showthread.php?7757-Anthrogenica-Sustainability-amp-Your-Support). Every cent/penny goes to the site's maintenance.

Thanks again,
