View Full Version : FTDNA refuses to assign a haplogroup to this guy

Take a look at the first entry of my project's mtDNA results (http://www.familytreedna.com/public/polish/default.aspx?vgroup=polish&section=mtresults). Kit 310294 has not been assigned a haplogroup. His CRS HVR1 mutation list is

16223T, 16274A, 16362C, 16390A, 16519C

His mtDNA Results page, likewise, shows "-" for his haplogroup. His matrilineage is Polish. His mtDNA test was batched on 7/14/2010 but completed on 9/24/2013. (Perhaps he ordered the test and submitted his DNA in 2010 but forgot to pay for the test until recently?)

I suspect that in 2010, FTDNA treated an mtDNA test as a unitary item. More recently, FTDNA broke it into an HVR1 test and an mtHaplogroup test. He is missing the latter.

All of that aside, his mutation list is very unusual for Poland. The best mtDNA haplogroup predictor (http://dna.jameslick.com/mthap/) ranks his classification possibilities as:

G3
G3a
E
G3a1'2
R6

Needless to say, none of these is common in Poland.

We could have demanded that FTDNA assign him a haplogroup; but because his mutation list is so rare anyway, I persuaded him simply to order mtHVR1toMega (upgrade to full mitochondrial sequencing) at the sale price.
