View Full Version : Are the Soqotri actually J1? (J-Y6305)

In older studies, the Soqotri were labelled as J*, but on yfull there is a rare J1 sample from Hadramaut under J-Y6305. The Soqotri are believed to descend from ancient Hadramautis.

Could this be their main lineage?

Also, an ancient sample from the Caucasus is within that clade. Suggesting that South Arabia has little to do with the origin of J1.

As far as I remember the Soqotri had negative M267 in those papers. But maybe the quality of that time testing did not allow to clearly define the M267 SNP?

Strange that nothing has been heard from Socotra since that time.

J* has also been detected in an Indonesian Y-Chrom study https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16114819

Most of the Yemenis that traded between South Arabia and Malaya were of Hadramauti origin. They call themselves Hadrami (from Hadramaut) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadhrami_people

I am almost certain this will be the main lineage of Socotra (it's a small island prone to founder effect).
