Does it mean anything if two SNPs have the same numbers but different prefixes. For example Z 5050 and PF 5050 on YJ2a

The prefix (letters) of a SNP comes from the research group who named the SNP. Here's a link to where each prefix comes from: https://haplogroup.org/y-snps-name-prefixes/

The suffix (numbers) of a SNP is of little significance. Each group has discovered multiple SNPs so will use a different number to differentiate between each SNP they found.

The numbers being the same between two SNPs means nothing.

I looked for Z5050 and I believe it comes under R1b. PF5050 comes under J2 though. Another example would be M267 coming under J1 and P267 coming under R2a2.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks but Z5050 is also under J2a ---J2a* PF 5050 is the upstream SNP for J2a2

Do you mind providing a link that shows Z5050 coming under J2? I've looked and all I can find is some people in a R1b-U152 thread on Anthrogenica mentioning Z5050 once (I'm fully aware there's a chance they're talking about a SNP in another subclade though - https://anthrogenica.com/archive/index.php/t-1567.html). I've searched on ISOGG, YFull, YSEQ, FTDNA and can't find that SNP at all. I'm quite curious now. Is it a private SNP (not yet on any public tree) by any chance?

Also, SNPs coming under multiple subclades do exist, but its not a common occurrence.

It is listed on page 10 of the J2 Project colored results for members. It is also listed in a J2 Project 2017 update on J2a* discussing Caucasian and non Caucasian brother lines.

By the way, the J2a* Z5050 non Caucasian line split into two branches, one in Pakistan, the other including a Levantine line. I suspect the line began near the Zagros mountains.

I looked on page 10 of the coloured chart on the "J M172 - J2 Y-DNA" FTDNA project (I'm assuming this is what you meant). I couldn't find one instance of Z5050 however I found 6 results for PF5050. Would you be able to provide a screenshot where you found Z5050?

Great Apologies That should be Z6050
