Hey everybody! This is my first post. Im portuguese. Ive done an autosomal test with myheritage. I used the raw data to try to discover my ydna. The best i got with morleydna was haplogroup ij m429.

I got red markers for i, i1 and j2. I cant be i2 since I got a red marker for haplogroup i, right?

So im thinking that my haplogroup must be j1. Its a good guess? Ive got brown hair (i was very blond growing up) and ive got blue/grey eyes.

Im 62% iberian, 30% irish and 8% north african if that helps.

Is livingdna a good option to answer my question?

If you do get red for I and J2, then yes, J1 would be the remaining haplogroup. Could you post a screenshot of your MorleyDNA results?

MyHeritage test for a very limited number of SNPs, so the chances of a specific SNP showing up as being green or red being a false alarm is higher. Here is a comparison between MyHeritage and 23andMe (my results):

This is the best i can do for now. Morleydna second guess is R-M173 but since im not at home right now, i dont have pics of it at the moment.

Thank you.

Looking at the result, it can be reliably inferred that you come under J1. You can order the individual M267 SNP from YSEQ to confirm this if you like (12.84 (on offer) for the SNP + 4.28 shipping. Link: https://www.yseq.net/product_info.php?products_id=11929).

Regarding obtaining a more detailed Y-DNA result, I would recommend the J1-M267 Superclade Panel from YSEQ (84.72 for the SNP + 4.28 shipping. Link: https://www.yseq.net/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=30693)

IMPORTANT: If you've already purchased the individual M267 SNP first, then if you decide to order the J1-M267 Superclade Panel afterwards, enter the code IDONTNEEDAKIT into the "Coupon Code" box when making your order. They will reuse the DNA from your individual M267 SNP test, saving you 4.28 shipping, and a lot of time!

Whether you want to confirm first or not is entirely up to you. It's very likely you belong to J1, but there is nothing wrong with being safe. Better to be safe than sorry. J1 exists in Portugal at levels of 1-10% (Source: Eupedia), with levels being significantly higher in South Portugal, so it's not an unusual result for a man from that country :)

LivingDNA is another option (89.00 (on offer, reduced from 109.00) for test and 12.95 shipping). You will get autosomal results, however this isn't too important as you could just upload your data from MyHeritage if you want). You also get mtDNA and Y-DNA results. The Y-DNA results won't be as detailed as YSEQ, and I'm not sure how detailed LivingDNA's tree is for J1. LivingDNA's Y-DNA tree has very high detail for some subclades but pretty poor detail for others, so it could be a gamble. People have had false results from them before. I have a user here who was supposed to have received his results in August, however he still hasn't recieved them as of this post.

LivingDNA does include mtDNA results too, unlike YSEQ, however YSEQ will give you a very detailed Y-DNA result (more so than LivingDNA) and is quicker + more reliable. I recommend YSEQ, however the choice is obviously yours in the end.

If you have any more questions, please let me know :D

Thank you! Ive never heard of them! I will start by ordering the cheaper one. Can you tell me how j1 ended up in Portugal since 57% of the main haplogroup here is R1b (celtic)?

I'm not much of an expert on J1 myself, but I'll do my best!

Looking at the 8 J1 Portuguese men on YFull, 3/8 come under J-FGC6035, 2/8 come under J-Y3081, 1/8 comes under J-FGC17491, 1/8 comes under J-ZS5769 and 1/8 comes under J-Y5322. All of these subclades come under J-L620. The blue lineages come under J-P58.

Looking at the most common one (J-FGC6035), all men under this subclade on YFull are from Portugal and their most recent common ancestor on their paternal lines lived roughly 1319 years ago (1250 ybp [years before 1950]), which is relatively recent. Out of the 4 men inbetween J-L620 and J-FGC6035, two come from England, one from Iran and one from Armenia. This may have been a relatively recent entry into Portugal.

There are others here who know much more about J1 than I do ( sorry :( ) so hopefully one of them sees this thread. There's more info on J1 at https://www.eupedia.com/europe/Haplogroup_J1_Y-DNA.shtml. They have a section dedicated to J-P58.

Here's another link referring to J-M365 (J-FGC6035 comes under here - M365 seems to be particularly seen in Portugal): http://www.academia.edu/5889836/Western_European_J1-M365_position_in_the_J1_haplogroup_Y_chromosome_ph ylogenetic_tree.

Thank you so much! I'll definitely order the cheaper one! My family doesnt know much about our family's past unfortunately.

What happens if J1 is not my haplogroup?! It will be a waste of money right? btw, if my haplogroup is indeed j1, how deep will the clade be (cheaper option)?

I didnt realize that YSEQ headquarters is in Berlin. It will be quick then.

That's why you should just get the M267 SNP on its own first. If you do not come under J1 then at least you only bought one SNP and not a whole panel.

If you want zero risk then there are other options, such as 23andMe or LivingDNA. These include mtDNA and will find your YDNA from the root instead of starting from M267 (you have to already be M267+ to buy the M267 Superclade Panel whereas anyone can buy a test from LivingDNA or 23andMe. Their YDNA results won't be as accurate though.

I'll take my chances with M267 then. I will report back once i get the results.

Get the individual SNP first just to be safe!

I'll do that.

Ive been reading. Is it possible that j1 was brought by the alans that entered northern Portugal ~1600 years ago? That ties up with what you said.

I just got my results but i dont quite understand them.

I got G+ (allele) for F4320, M267 and PF4782

My haplogroup is J1 right?

Thank you. Later i will do the superclade panel. This will give me plenty to play around for now!

There's no rush my friend. You have time to do many things like save up money and do research on J1-M267. It's a very interesting haplogroup with many branches that have very unique and contrasting origins with each other. You can also consult the J1-M267 experts on this forum (I'm not really any good with anything that isn't R2-M479, but I do my best for any Y-DNA group!).
