There was a certain cataclysm with mass death of people in the North-West region of Africa in the 1st millennium BC (maybe Tartessian catastrophe (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0305440313002422) in VI c. BC?).

I think it gave rise to the myth of Atlantis. It was not in 9500 BC (as Plato said), but 300-400 years before him. Plato described Atlantis as a developed state, not aa a Paleolithic society of 10 millenia BC.

Interestingly enough, Atlantis has been found in North Africa, as all the signs of the catastrophe. The Richat structure in Mauretania shows the same size, the concentric rings, the same sort of stones, and plenty artefacts that point towards it being Atlantis.
