Hello, I received my ethnicity estimate from myHeritage. Strangely, my results included Greek. I have no Greek or southern Italian ancestry that could account for this. Any ideas as to why this would happen?

North and West Europe
88.6%
North and West European
51.0%
Scandinavian
37.6%

South Europe
11.4%
Greek
9.3%
Italian
2.1%

Edit: I do have my kit up on Genesis. Here is the kit number: FA7554881

Best answer I can give is that MH can be quirky sometimes, and lately it seems to have a bias toward giving Greek and Balkan results. Based on your Gedmatch, I wouldn't assume the MH Greek results are meaningful.

I see. MH seemed to have missed out on my Eastern European. Someone told me the that the Greek estimate could be a result of my Italian and Ashkenazi overlapping and pulling the estimate south east. I don't know how much that can be the case since I hardly inherited any Ashkenazi DNA.

My father score 8 % Greek on Myheritage and has no connection to South Italy or Greece.

I get 1.4% Balkan on Myheritage, the closest result anywhere else being 1.0% Central/Southern Ashkenazi on Ethnogene (Hungary highlighted). Seems it could be misread Ashkenazi; are your Ashkenazi ancestors from Hungary or Romania?

I actually don't know where they came from since they arrived in Germany in the late 1700s. Family legend says Hungary.

I am 50% Croatian and my heritage only gave me 15.2% Balkan and 4.9% east euro. I am 25% Italian yet they give me 31.3% Italian. I am 12.5 % irish and 12.5% colonial American , german French dutch British and yet my heritage has me at 43.4%?north and Western Europe. So I wouldn’t take them to seriously.

Hey Sizzles, it may help to look at MH's ethnicity maps of Croatia, Italy, Ireland, etc. Your Balkan percentage is quite low but other than that the estimates don't seem too far off from your reported ancestry. Many European countries tend to cluster quite closely together. Looking at the overlaps may help.

My known paper trail is 50% Irish; 25% Austrian; 25% Hungarian
Documented settlement in Vas, Hungary and Graz, Austria for over two hundred years.
Is the Balkan estimate skewed? I originally felt it was.
Now, I see the Balkans as closer to the original Austrian-Hungarian Empire - ethnically and geographically.

Irish, Scottish, and Welsh

24.6%
Balkan

The results could be skewed. My mother is Austrian and didn't score any Balkan whatsoever. It all depends on where your ancestors are from, though, since ethnicities don't necessarily follow country boundaries. I would expect more Central European (German) with your paper trail.
