Hi, I just received my results from national geographic and discovered my Y (which is Russian) is J-L210 (which I believe is j2a4b3 ?) does this mean I have Jewish heritage ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

P.S. I am a little shocked as there is no known Jewish heritage on my fathers side.

Many L210's are of Ashkenazi ancestry--that is my Y lineage as well. I have analyzed, however, several samples from my lab who are L210, even Z482 and are not Jewish: 2 samples from Turkey and 1 sample from Agrigento, Sicily. Do you know where in Russia your paternal lineage is from? There is a Bulgarian who is also L210 from FTDNA.

Haplogroups will almost always pre-date any recognized religious divisions.

Yes,.. there are a few L210 people with no known Jewish ancestry. In one of the last m67 STR analyses i did, it appeared that there was a sub-branch of non Jewish L210. STR analyses are not entirely phylogenetically accurate/reliable, thus I'm not sure at this stage whether the sub-branch is "real" or not. It is something that I may like to investigate further in the future.

Is there any information I could provide from my results?

Please transfer your results into a Family Tree DNA account (https://www.familytreedna.com/landing/nat-geo-transfer.aspx). This is free.

But then, I suggest you take advantage of FTDNA's current discount sale to order at least 37 markers (Y-DNA37), and preferably 67 markers (Y-DNA67). Your haplotype (marker value pattern) can then be compared with those of other members of J-L210. The test will make use of your existing DNA samples from National Geographic.

We have also a Tyrolean L210+ kit (278654) where the Y-DNA37 haplotype is pretty distant to all others and only speculative is that three 1000 Genomes Tuscans L210+ and two Irish haplotypes seem to be the nearest in Europe. 278654 has a tipical catholic Tyrol village farmer paternal ancestry going back 250 years and at the present no connection to any possible "hidden jewish" ancestry is available AFAIK.

posted on the other thread (quoted below) - OP paternal ancestry is Russian, mine is Ukrainian, and the yfull page I mention in the quote shows mostly Eastern and North-Central Europeans as well for this haplogroup.

I see a lot of Eastern and Central European flags on https://www.yfull.com/tree/J-L210/, do you think the J-L210 branches in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Poland and Germany are of Jewish origin (at least for the paternal haplogroup)? mine could hypothetically be J-Y81401, as it's found on those two people from my paternal ancestry's region (now called Ivano-Frankivsk). could it gotten to Hutsuls/Rusyns from Jews or could it be a regional development from another source (Neolithic, Steppe etc).

Great point, this haplogroup seems to be present in both a limited number of European gentiles and Ashkenazi Jews. Of course, branches under J-Y15222 may be carried by the descendants of Jewish converts to Christianity.

Yo bro, what are your STR results. I want to resolve the most common J2 branch among moroccan Arabs as no sample has been tested for terminal SNPs. The modal is as such : 12-24-14-14/16-11-14-13-14-11-32

Do you belong to this cluster? It is found at high frequencies in the Doukkala area, 10% and more

I’m arab but my father isn’t arab and yes his Berber.

You can see my cluster here:

Does that J2 cluster from the Doukkala area belong to certain tribes?

I don't know because it is found among other moroccan plain Arabs as well
