I recently had an FTDNA result of N-L1034. My great grandfather is from Sejny, Poland (in the environs of the Suwalki Gap). This Halplogroup has been a bit of a surprise for me; I've always expected that my father's line came from Finland (and the FTDNA matches seem to confirm that), however the N-L1034 is from the Ugric branch so maybe another origin is possible?

Anyways, this journey into my DNA result has been fascinating! I've recently uploaded my raw DNA results to mytrueancestry.com with the following results:

N-L1034 seems to occur primarily in the Volga-Ural region in Russia (especially in Bashkortostan and Tatarstan). Although the possibilities are low, it may be related to a Finnish Tatar (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finnish_Tatars) lineage, who inhabit Finland, and trace their origin back to the Volga-Urals. There are also the related, Lipka Tatars (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lipka_Tatars)in Poland.

N-L1034 of Heimdallr is most probably not anyhow connected to the small Finnish Tatar population, which came to Finland in the late 19th century, at least via Finland. FTDNA Y-12 is BTW clearly too inaccurate to define the relevant matches.

L1034 clearly has some connection with Ugric tribes, and Finnish L1034's may have ancient Ugric/Proto-Ugric background.

MyTrueAncestry.com recently added numerous Baltic samples to their models, and now my ancient ancestry map has a much tighter spread, centering primarily around the Baltic States:
