View Full Version : Confusing large Scandinavian and a little Ashkenazi in my MyHeritage report

I hope the brilliant community of Anthrogenica can help me to better understand my results via multiple sites. :)

My first test... unfortunatelly I made it with MyHeritage. Afterwards I read a lot of bad experience from others who got weird result from MyHeritage.

MyHeritage:
39.4%
Scandinavian
27.6%
Balkan
24.1%
Eastern European
7.5%
Ashkenazi Jewish
1.4%
North and Western Europe

As a Hungarian (Central-East Europe) this amount of Scandinavian is so huge. I got more scandinavian then some Norwegian, Swedish, Danish people. On the other side I never known anybody from my family's past who was Jewish. Also never known Scandinavian, but I'm a pale skinned guy and I had blonde hair but it turned to brown when I was 7-8 years old.

Otherwise my Jtest show me:
SOUTH_BALTIC 18.88 Pct
NORTH-CENTRAL_EURO 18.15 Pct
ATLANTIC 17.12 Pct
EAST_EURO 16.09 Pct
WEST_MED 8.91 Pct
EAST_MED 8.54 Pct
ASHKENAZI 7.12 Pct
WEST_ASIAN 4.63 Pct
SIBERIAN 0.56 Pct
MIDDLE_EASTERN 0
SOUTH_ASIAN 0
EAST_AFRICAN 0
EAST_ASIAN 0
WEST_AFRICAN 0

Jtest Oracle, doesn't show close Ashkenazi:
1 Hungarian 5.2
2 Austrian 5.32
3 Serbian 8.02
4 Romanian 10.76
5 West & Central German 12.32
6 Polish 12.43
7 Ukranian 13.46
8 Netherlander 13.71
9 West Russian 14.17
10 Ukrainian-Russian 14.27
11 North Swedish 14.62
12 South & Central Swedish 14.71
13 Norwegian 15.23
14 Danish 15.42
15 South Finnish 15.61
16 English 16.04
17 Cornish 16.06
18 Orcadian 16.51
19 French 16.68
20 Belorussian 16.91

After this confusion, I made a test with DNA.land:

DNA.land
North Slavic 41%
Balkan 39%
Sardinian 10% (?)
Southwestern European 2.7%
Northwest European 2.3%
Kalash 1.8% (? - Nowdays North-Pakistan peoples, some theory connect them with the White Huns)
South/Central European 1.7%
Ambiguous 1.5%

That 10% Sardinian also confusing me. There is much less Scandinavian, and 0% Ashkenazi. That Kalash result also weird, but it's only 1.8%.

My wife also got a weird result from MyHeritage. She got 36% English, more then some white British person. (She is also Hungarian, like me, with Polish ancestry...)

I'm still waiting for my LivingDNA result.

Is Scandinavian or Jewish origin possible? I'm very confused. Can we trust results under 10%?

(Sorry if my English isn't very good, I'll try to improve it...)

Do you know much about your family tree? Is it possible that you had Germanic-speaking ancestors who converted to Judaism? Perhaps it is an error on MyHeritage's part? Maybe at a later date get a second opinion from another company? I know Hungary is a bit of a mixed bag genetically with various groups of people settling down or mixing with various newcomers to the area.

Your English is good, no worries!

Is it possible that you had Germanic-speaking ancestors who converted to Judaism?

Wouldn't the opposite be more likely? A Jewish ancestor who converted or intermarried with a Christian and completely assimilated all traces of being jewish?

Your JTest Oracle suggests you are closest to Hungarians; your MyHeritage results are a bit off in that regard. IMO a better way to see if you have Jewish DNA is to see if you have Jewish DNA-matches. Do you have those? Do they overlap at the same segments? This would indicate if you have some Ashkenazi ancestry.

What I know about my family except Hungarian heritage is Slovakian (mostly) and Polish ancestors. So, my North Slavic percentage (from DNA.land) not surprised me. :)

Anyway here is my Eurogenes K13:

1 North_Atlantic 32.58
2 Baltic 29.92
3 West_Med 12.91

7 Amerindian 0.66
8 Oceanian 0.31
9 Northeast_African 0.19
10 Red_Sea 0.15
11 South_Asian 0.01

3 Serbian 6.96
4 East_German 7.9
5 Croatian 8.18
6 Moldavian 8.51
7 Romanian 10.88

16 Polish 16.42
17 North_Swedish 16.91
18 Swedish 17.57
19 Danish 17.76
20 Southwest_Russian 17.88

I'm also close to Germanic, Balkan and East Slavic nations.

Yeah I think about a repeat maybe with 23andme, but later. I'll still test my and my wife's raw data (with her permission) on other sites.

I have to learn more about overlaps. I saw some with red highlight, but I don't understand completely that GedMatch list and these red (low overlap) marks.

Both are likely honestly, however it depends on the situation.

Exactly this, matches are important.

You're close to Hungarians as Pylsteen mentioned, and more so on the Eurogenes test. That is at least consistent. I would definitely look into whether you have Jewish matches as that will give you a more reliable image of things compared to ethnicity estimations, which aren't always accurate.

While Myheritage is notorious for mixing up Balkan/Ashkenazi/Italian etc. (being an Israeli company that boasts not only Ashkenazi samples but Sephardic and Mizrahi, this is very surprising!), your Jtest seems to suggest genuine Ashkenazi. Davidski says anything above four percent or so can probably be considered real, but this seems to suggest at least one Ashkenazi grandparent (the average for a "full" Ashkenazi being ~28%). Check your GEDmatch oracle 4 and your matches (going by "Jewish" names isn't enough, run them in Jtest- I have a full Ashkenazi match called Smith, for instance).

The high Sardinian on DNA Land may be confused Ashkenazi. As I've mentioned, Ashkenazi often overlaps with Southern Euro and Balkan due to genetic distance, and Myheritage is far from the only site with this issue (hell, even 23andme is capable of it!).

As for the Scandinavian- Myheritage can't easily be trusted even with western Euro ethnicities. I have 13% Irish/Scottish/Welsh while I score 57% Irish/Scottish on Ancestry! Likewise, I have zero Scandinavian despite having 100% Scandinavian DNA relatives in Norway and Sweden! Again, check your matches to see if you have any Scandinavian ones.

Post your Eurogenes K13 + EUtest V2.

Jtest is very outdated. I know plenty of people who score over 5 % jewish who are not jewish.

Myheritage should not be taken to serious.

My father is 25% North swede Saami and score 42+% Scandinavian and 4% Japanese.

You can look at your DNA-matches in MyHeritage; click on them and then you see which part of the DNA you share and also which matches you have in common. If they overlap (triangulate) at the same segments, they will have a "triangulated segment" icon behind their name.

I have Scandinavian dna because I have British ancestry.

I have Scandinavian dna because I have British ancestry.

I have no idea where it can come from in my case. I know about Polish origin from a side of my family. I think they had Scandinavian origin also.
My Y-DNA (and mtDNA) is also related to Nordic peoples.

Some calculators gave me partly of Baltic origin. And Oracle matches in a few places. MyHeritage gave me: 0% Baltic

In Oracles I didn't get Ashkenazi in single population matches, but I got Scottish, Welsh, and I also got Irish somewhere. MyHeritage Celtic: 0%

I think about repeat a test with 23andMe or any better sometime.
