(CNN) About 19 million years ago, the world's largest parrot lived in New Zealand and used its massive beak to crack open food, according to a new study. The parrot stood over 3 feet tall and weighed about 15.5 pounds. The fossils were found among others dating to 19 million years ago near St. Bathans in Central Otago, New Zealand. This area is known for its bird fossils dating back to the Miocene period, which ranges between 5.3 and 23 million years ago.

New Zealand was also home to the Moa, a large flightless bird that could stand up to 12 feet tall and weigh up to 500 lbs. They existed until quite recently(about 1300 AD) and were extirpated by the Maori, the first people to arrive on the islands. It is an example of island gigantism where animals grow larger in size than their mainland counterparts, similar to the even larger elephant bird that occurred in Madagascar.

It would be cool if lot of the megafauna like Mammoths are brought back to life.

They are working on mammoths but even that seems to be far right now, as for others it probably won't happen anytime in our lifetimes if ever. Honestly I wish time travel was a thing, we could go back in time to see these in their own habitat lol

It's likely they will never bring back the mammoth within our lifetimes. They can genetically engineer animals to display archaic traits though. I recently read about an experiment that's still in progress to reverse engineer the chicken to bring back dinosaur type features.
