View Full Version : Paternal Granmother's Brother came back as being E-M96

So basically I just tested the sole surviving brother of my paternal grandmother, he is 94 years old and has dementia. Fortunately, the DNA was captured on the first attempt and now I have his 23andme results. Anyhow, as the title says, his paternal haplogroup came back as E-M96; given that his version of 23andme is V5, I wonder if this is an artifact of the new chip, or if he is a legit E-M96(xE-P147, xE-M75). Any advice? Per the scientific details page of 23andme's y-dna haplogroup it makes it seem like they do test for E-P147 and E-M75, yet I do not know if the tree is version specific (i.e., V5) or if it is generic.

You might want to get him a FTDNA Family Finder test or Y-37 if you can spend a bit more, currently on sale for the next day or two.

That would get a sample on file at FTDNA if you ever needed to do more detailed Y-DNA testing.

The FTDNA sampling is usually easier for a person in his state, because it uses cheek swabs rather than spitting.

The Y-DNA test needs an actual sample. The data from another test is not applicable.

The different DNA testing vendors do not generally transfer DNA samples. You need to actually test at FTDNA to get your sample saved there for any other testing which you might want from them in the future. A sample might be used for mtDNA, autosomal DNA or Y DNA testing or a combination thereof if the sample has enough to go around, but each test needs to use real DNA.

Unfortunately the person in question is in another country and I do not have a way to test him using FTDNA anytime soon.
