View Full Version : Arabian peninsula ancestry showing up as East Med ancestries on less robust sites?

Why does me and my brother's Yemeni ancestry show up as the following on less robust DNA websites? It often is a placeholder for that mixture in us, as in not showing actual Arab, it replaces that rough percentage of our Arab admixture. But on more robust sites like 23andme, it shows up as Arabian Peninsula and Egyptian and yada.

For example:

DNA.Land: we both get decent amounts Mediterranean Islander

LivingDNA: I get Armenia and Cyprus

FTDNA: I got SE Europe and a little Middle East (V4), I got SE Europe (V5), brother got Anatolia (V5)

See the pattern? I suspect it has to do with ancient DNA and the smaller sites don't have enough references to accurately calculate this ancestry. But it's weird for DNA.Land, they have an Arab and Egyption category but we still get Med Islander.

I don't have an answer to your question, but with DNA.Land, the shift to Mediterranean Islander doesn't surprise me. I usually get relatively minor percentages from North African and/or the Middle East, but on DNA.Land that seems to show up under Mediterranean Islander and Southern Europe and/or Balkan.

How much Yemeni ancestry do you have?

On the latest 23andme update, I get 5.8% and my brother gets 8.9% if we add up the total Middle East and also trace North/East African components
