I have seen several spanish individuals on myheritage with up to 5% eastern European.

In my case I get about 3.5% eastern European on myheritage and 5.5% north slavic on DNA land.

Eurogenes K36 gives me these eastern percentages:

Central_Euro 5.65 Pct
East_African -
East_Asian -
East_Balkan 3.53 Pct
East_Central_Asian -
East_Central_Euro 2.25 Pct
East_Med 3.30 Pct
Eastern_Euro 1.67

Also Italian 11.9 Pct

Do you think these 'eastern' numbers are just noise? As far as I know all my 4 grandparents are Spanish.

Are you descended from the man commonly known as Christopher Columbus? According to one Portuguese researcher who spent decades on the issue (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/poland/8166041/Christopher-Columbus-was-son-of-Polish-king.html), "Columbus" was actually the son of an exiled Polish-Lithuanian king.

Welcome, there is a Spanish section here, you might want to ask there.

About your results, part of the issue is MyHeritage and how bizarre their results are. In K36 that's pretty normal, as is in the better K13 and K15

Thanks, Ruderico. I will definitely explore that section.

My Heritage is sketchy with results but there were a good number of Slavs in medieval Spain as slaves, soldiers and eunuchs, called Saqaliba (just means Slavs).

I found this on Eupedia:

The Visigothic Kingdom was the larger and longer lived than the Suebi Kingdom, and yet the Goths do not seem to have had any significant genetic impact on the Iberian population - at least not in terms of Germanic Y-DNA. The reason might simply be that they were no longer a predominantly Germanic tribe. After all, the Goths had lived for many centuries in Eastern Europe and nearly two more centuries in the Balkans before invading Italy, Gaul and Iberia. They could have assimilated a lot of non-Germanic people on the way, notably R1a and I2a1b Slavs and predominantly E1b1b, I2a1b and J2 Balkanic people. It would be pretty complicated at the moment to untangle the Balkanic E1b1b and J2 from all the others (Neolithic, Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Jewish, Arabic) found in Iberia. But it is remarkably easy to check the Eastern European I2a1b (M423) and R1a (M458 and Z280). No historical migration could account for Slavic haplogroups in Iberia apart from the East European populations assimilated by the Goths before the 4th century. The I2a Project at FTDNA has three M423-Dinaric-N and one M423-Isles-B2 from Spain, while the R1a1a and Subclades Y-DNA Project has four Spanish Z280 (CTS1211+) members

During the Byzantine reconquista of Greece and some of the Balkans esp. in the 7th and 8th cs a great number of Slavs were captured and sold into slavery from Thessaloniki. Some undoubtedly must have wound up in Spain (and elsewhere)

We know from recent ancient remain analysis that Visigoths (by the time they arrived to Spain) had a very important Balkan admixture. I think they could explain why Spaniards score a small but significant amount on categories associated to Balkan people.

But we also have the Saqalibah indeed as an explanation.

The influx continues much later, at one point slaves made up to 1/3 of the population of Mallorca. Having offspring with the slave women was commonplace, like on Crete and so was the granted freedom after some years served by their masters.Russians,Balkan Slavs etc.

I'm not sure of those figures, but for what is worth people from the Balearic islands do seem more Mediterranean than most in continental Spain, at least those available in G25. There's other explanations though.

According to Eupedia there are 9.5% (l2+R1a) of Slavic haplogroups in Iberia. The most striking case is in Cantabria with 8.5% R1a.

Your Central Euro and East Balkan and East Central Euro and Eastern Euro and East Med was brought by the migration of the Gothic tribes, including Visigothic people.
They were not Slavs, from a cultural point of view, but East Germanics, most close to our days Romanians.
Later most Gothic tribes got Slavizied and that happened in Balkans and Ukraine.
The Gothic tribes from Romania/Dacia lands become Latinized.
I have explained a lot in other threads, including on Eupedia that I2-din is not compulsory Slavic.
There is I2-din in Greece or Romania, that came there before 600-700 AD.
So, it came with migration of Dacian or Gothic people.
Regarding the theory that Gothic tribes came from Sweden, that was a legend.
East Germanic language was not mutually inteligible with Old Norse, neither with West Germanic languages.
Goths were attested in NW Poland, by archaelogical discoveries, most Northwards.
And from the writings of Roman and Greek historians, Gothic tribes are attested especially on the land of Romania/Dacia and in Central NE Europe and in Balkans.
Romania is full of archaelogical proofs that most Gothic tribes settled in Romania.

Later, a part of the Gothic tribes are migration Westwards, a part settling in Italy and another part in Spain.
You can tell your Eastern DNA is Romanian :) ,or DacianGothic. East Balkanic AU DNA peaks only in Romanian ethnics.
That East Balkanic is surely only Dacian and Gothic.

That "Central Euro" has been picked by Goths from Hallstatt Celts and Dacian Celtic tribes, very likely.
East Med, was taken from ancient Greeks and/or Thracians.

Has the Eupedia circus finally acknowledged the presence of R1b in Upper Paleolithic Europe?

I have just figured out how to use Vahaduo and nMonte3, so I have started to play around some with those two tools, and this means that I do not understand all things G25; for example, what is the difference between scaled and unscaled G25 data?

With all the Balearic, Menorcan and Mallorcan averages removed from Global25_PCA_modern_pop_averages_scaled, I get this with six samples from Global25_PCA_modern_scaled:

I know FTDNA's "My Origins" is crappy but I bring it here as a reason why somebody with Iberian ancestry could show his/her doubts.

These are my results. My mother scores 6% in that "Eastern European" category whatever it means.

I remember other Spaniards in this forum sharing results and also having significant percentages.

For what is worth in 23andme Eastern European is very rare in Iberians. I think the only Portuguese I have seen with some is..me. And I only get a residual and insignificant 0.4%

My Heritage is sketchy with results but there were a good number of Slavs in medieval Spain as slaves, soldiers and eunuchs, called Saqaliba (just means Slavs).

As soldiers that I can believe, because we all know Slavs are the best soldiers in the world.

I have an ancient line or two to the early north Spain kingdoms. And, if you look at them, you will see a marriage to a Polish princess or etc. Maybe she brought her Polish entourage with her, who married into Spanish society.

We know from recent ancient remain analysis that Visigoths (by the time they arrived to Spain) had a very important Balkan admixture. I think they could explain why Spaniards score a small but significant amount on categories associated to Balkan people.

But we also have the Saqalibah indeed as an explanation.

The Visigoths having intermingled with Balkan people can't have been the reason for this influx, as the Slavs arrive about 2 centuries later in the Balkans. It could have been an earlier event though or most probably it is related to the Saqalibah .

This historical narrative can be only applied for the Southern Balkans and Greece, certainly not for whole of the Balkans(it also depends what you considered 'Balkans' in your post).
Otherwise, going by historical narrative we might get similar conclusion for the Albanians and the Vlachs as well just because the Greeks haven't recorded their presence before the 11-th century.

However, the Chernyakhov culture which is a culture defined by the Gothic presence but also Slavic and Geto-Dacian elements as well( "Matthews & Heather 1991, p. 88-92"), was present at the lower Bank of Danube and the Eastern part of modern Romanian Wallachia, parts which are considered as 'Balkans' by many etnographers and other scientists.

I never thought I'd live to see my old thread revive... I'm still trying to figure out what's this 'eastern pull' of mine. I do know that I have a Moroccan great-great grandmother (perhaps jewish?) but that may be too distant.

I have yet to find a Spaniard with more east_med than me. This is k13:

Well, I am R1A-M417 , a pretty Slavic haplotype.:)

And all of my paternal great-grandparents were Andalusians.

Slavic in Spain could be a legacy of the Crusader States on the Balkans, which existed well after most of it was conquered by The Ottomans. After that all Western aristocracy and richer Greeks(suppose with their servants) were evacuated to Italy and possibly in Spain. For example the artist El Greco was from those people. There should be no dispute that the Greeks around that time were already admixed with Slavs.
