A while ago I saw a post by artist Oscar Nilsson saying that he had been hired to reconstruct the faces of two individuals from the Mesolithic in Motala, Sweden. here is the result:

I'm always unreasonably annoyed by any of these "reconstructions", whatever the anthropological background.
Possibly by the series of ridiculous Aunt Sally gargoyles promoted by Julian Richards (a very good lad, not his fault) and other "Time Team" type archaeotainment Brit telly efforts.
"Oh look! A hairy potato! Or perhaps a greasy weasel?".
Me and 'Er Indoors used to make a bingo style game of it when the "amazing (or perhaps "mysterious")" Mr Punch effort was finally displayed. Invariably fell into the two basic categories outlined. Maybe it's just brits, though?

Just stop it. All of you. It's embarrassing.

You've got skull shape, eye sockets, teeth and maybe quite a bit of Fat (we're talking about brits here). As for skin, ears, eyelids, hair, even lips and nose .. forget about it.

From the second sentence on, I didn't understand anything! :(

Among many other issues such reconstructions have imo, why give him this specific haircut?

His supra-orbital ridges doesn't seem to be represented very well in that reconstruction.

Also, did the 'owner' of this skull have the G allele of the EDAR gene? I know about half of the Motala HG seemingly did. Is this is even relevant to his reconstruction? Pretty sure its related to reduced chin protrusion but not sure about what else in the skull morphology its relevant to, ignoring teeth obviously.

Pretty sure I saw that guy at a Gordon conference.

Regarding EDAR: In a 2015 study, three (of six) ancient DNA samples (7,900-7,500 BP) from Motala, Sweden; two (33003000 BC) from the Afanasevo culture and one (400200 BC) Scythian sample were found to carry the rs3827760 mutation.[14]

Do you have a source with their respective measurements?

I wonder where the SHG people got their EDAR from.
