Spanish and Portuguese DNA are pretty similar IIRC, so the fact you got Spanish doesn’t surprise me. Your 6% North African is cool. Do you get any North African on 23andme, or just Iberian? I definitely wonder if the Iberian category on there includes Moorish markers.

Yeah, then you probably have some Moorish ancestry buried into your Iberian percentages as well. I’d definitely recommend G25 to see if you have any Levantine or North African ancestry. From the reference sheet, just choose the Portuguese samples, and some of the North African ones, to see what you would get on there. I’m pretty good at making tailored models, so hmu if you need any help.

Yes, and my family is from the town of Silves which was the former capital of the Kingdom of the Algarve. It was held by the moors for a long time: "After 713, when the Moors invaded Iberia, Silves became part of the Umayyad Emirate of Córdoba under the Arabic name of Shilb (شلب). Looks like "you like islands" - Baleares, Azores...

Looks like "you like islands" - Baleares, Azores...

It gives 99% of Portuguese people the Azores as the top region no matter where you're from in Portugal because most test-takers are Azoreans. The island was not inhabited by anyone until 1432 so everyone on that island is of mainland Portuguese ancestry. AncestryDNA, and myheritage pinpointed that I'm southern Portuguese well.

My second region is Faro which is accurate for my ancestry:

So it is like Malopolskie for Polish people. It seems every Pole scores Malopolskie as the top region in 23andMe.

They give me my correct region as well, but it is far down the list (not 2nd but 6th from the top in my case):

They used to give me Ukraine (Lviv Oblast) before the update - now they say they do not detect Ukraine.

But they detect Russia instead, quite weird:
