Uploaded combined 23andMe and MyHeritage raw data and got this:

11/41 SNPs were missing.

In reality I have straight dark brown hair, green eyes, light/moderate skin, no freckles and I tan decently as long as I put enough sunscreen.

Blonde hair and freckles seem to get overestimated. Ι wonder if it gets more accurate for people who have done a WGS test and have all SNPs covered.

Does this work for surveys? 23andme works like this.

I also do not understand what this refers to with dark / olive skin type, if it is type SSA or just a summer Mediterranean tan, if it is the second case there is a European bias ...

Does this work for surveys? 23andme works like this.

It's based on IrisPlex. I'd guess it's based on GWAS studies rather than simple surveying. Researchers certainly have a problem deciding whether green eyes are a variation of blue or whether they are intermediate between blue and brown, for example this predictor considers them intermediate but 23andMe groups blue and green eyes together.

I also do not understand what this refers to with dark / olive skin type, if it is type SSA or just a summer Mediterranean tan, if it is the second case there is a European bias ...

Yeah I'm pretty sure light/pale skin refers to extremely pale phenotypes you find in Ireland, Finland, etc.

It would work better for people who have coverage for all the SNPs, they probably released this tool to try and hype up the new WGS service YSEQ is offering

I thought it would be interesting to upload the 23andMe kits I extracted from BAMs of aDNA samples over the years.

It's very inaccurate but I suppose it's not their fault just the statistical models for phenotype guessing are still quite off.

I can grow an afro and gives me 100% straight hair. Actually, pretty much everyone gets 100% straight hair so far I think. Maybe they are only looking for African curly hair SNPs or something?

EDIT:

It must be glitched. I tried entering the most curly possible set of SNPs into the 'example' (rs7349332=T/T,rs17646946=G/G,rs11803731=T/T) and it still gives 100% straight hair.

I'm rs7349332=C/C,rs17646946=G/G,rs11803731=A/A ; so it probably wouldn't change the prediction for me. :P I don't think 3 SNPs are enough, even 23andMe which looks at 75 different SNPs predicts 'wavy or straight' for me.

If I had to guess, the studies this model is based on was done on north Euro populations but when they made the avatar thingy they didn't take that into account. So everyone's results are a bit darker than they are in reality. Also, if you score "quick tanning" they add a bit more melanin to your avatar, my sister got the same end result as you :)

I don't know it freaks on Northern Europeans like me....

Yesterday I tried the 'official' csv file of my parent and I all same kind of result, all highly blond, blue eyed. In reality I'm kind of dark blond.....

So I tried a txt file, even wilder!

I have dark-medium brown hair they predicted black (I do dye it black sometimes).

My eye colour is brown(which they predicted).

My skin colour only gets olive when I am very tanned. I'm not sure why they group Dark with Olive.

My hair is wavy but more leaning to curly than straight and they predicted straight. When it's medium-short length it's more straight I guess.

My mum is much darker than me but freckles easily whilst I don't :( but they predicted freckles for me still.

They correctly predicted my tanning ability though I usually burn not tan.

On the picture they showed me of my phenotype prediction, I look like a Latino with Dark Brown skin and light brown eyes haha. IRL my colouring and even some features are very similar to Jamshyd Godrej(though he's much older haha).

Did you check how many SNPs were missing? MyHeritage kits miss 15 SNPs, 23andMe also miss 15 SNPs - but not all the same. I'd be curious to see a sample that scores "pale skin" and what genotypes they have. Maybe it's bugged like the curly hair prediction.

I wan't quite sure how well this thing would work for east Asians, but I gave it a try and it seems pretty accurate!

Here are the results for me and my dad.

My dad
44717

me
44718

As the results say, I got bit more freckles than my dad and have slightly darker skin tone.
We both have super-straight, super-thick Asian hair and get tanned real easy.

Both me and my dad have done 30x WGS so I looked up all the missing SNPs and manually put them into our 23andme-formatted txt files.
The only SNP missing is rs312262906... For some reason Yseq keeps on saying that specific SNP's missing from the file even though it's in there.
I have no idea why it does that. But after all, it's just one SNP, so I just left it at that.

That tool missed in prediction of my phenotype. I did autosomal in FTDNA. It might be that FTDNA does not inculde in raw file some important SNPs.

super interesting, it does (potentially) reaffirm that older Europeans had alleles for darker features probably more than nowadays. Thanks for sharing this ancient sample!

My results using 23andme data.

45412

They seem to be sort of accurate, but not for high susceptibility of sunburns. I'm at 30.5% there, but get 31.7% for moderate tanning. Quick tan category should be higher for me. I get 28.5%. I only have to be in my backyard for 15 minutes and people think I went on vacation to the beach. Also I have no freckles.

They don't include wavy hair as a category. My hair is pretty much straight, but when it grows I get waves on the ends.
