Nazi leader Adolf Hitler's wife Eva Braun may have been of Jewish descent according to DNA analysis carried out for a British television documentary.

The anti-Semitic German leader responsible for the Holocaust married his long-term lover Braun shortly before they committed suicide in a Berlin bunker in 1945.

But the program to be screened by Britain's independent Channel 4 on Wednesday says hair samples show Braun may have had Jewish ancestry herself.

Scientists commissioned by the Dead Famous DNA program tested hair said to have come from a brush used by Braun and found at Hitler's mountain retreat.

In DNA from the hair, they found a sequence passed down through the maternal line - haplogroup N1b1 - which was "strongly associated" with Ashkenazi Jews.

Ashkenazi Jews dispersed into central and eastern Europe in the early Middle Ages, and some converted to Catholicism in Germany in the 19th century.

"This is a thought-provoking outcome - I never dreamt that I would find such a potentially extraordinary and profound result," presenter Mark Evans said.

The hairs came from a monogrammed hairbrush found at Hitler's Bavarian residence by US army intelligence officer Paul Baer, a US 7th Army captain, who had privileged access to the property and took several items from Braun's private apartment.

N1b1 is neolithic in Europe from Caucasus to Iberia and I find Ashkenazim (on Ian Logan spreadsheet) in a late N1b2 4735A 4917 11928 12092 13129 13710 14581 16176A, but if you have Jewish samples of N1b1, please, say to me where I may found them, but you know that in mtDNA, without an FMS, we may say a little about the relatedness: only 1 mutation may be worth thousands of years.

From Costa et al 2013:

"The fourth major Ashkenazi founder mtDNA falls within haplogroup N1b (ref. 2). The distribution of N1b is much more focused on the Near East than that of haplogroup K (ref. 24), and the distinctive Ashkenazi N1b2 subclade has accordingly being assigned to a Levantine source2. N1b2 has until now been found exclusively in Ashkenazim, and although it dates to only ~2.3 ka, it diverged from other N1b lineages ~20 ka (ref. 24) (Supplementary Table S5). N1b2 can be recognized in the HVS-I database by the variant 16176A, but Behar et al.2 tested 14 Near Eastern samples (and some east Europeans) with this motif and identified it as a parallel mutation. Therefore, despite the long branch leading to N1b2, no Near Eastern samples are known to belong to it".

Thank you for the link. I reckon the headline, and the suggestions of Jewish ancestry, are likely nothing more than sensationalist nonsense.

Their source for what they believe to be Braun's hair (a brush found at the Berghof?) is not very reassuring. If they were serious about the possible link, they would have tested the entire mtDNA. And, if the provenance of the brush in question were somehow established, and the possibility of contamination excluded to a reasonable degree of certainty, then, and only then would speculation regarding the origins of the maternal line be acceptable.

Also in FTDNA's nomenclature, N1b2 has the 16176A mutation and is associated with Ashkenazi Jews. (See our project's mtDNA results (https://www.familytreedna.com/public/polish/default.aspx?section=mtresults).) The article is thus too garbled to take very seriously.

For me, this news is incorrect.
Talking to some laboratories that do tests on people death have told me that the hair DNA is not testable after some time.
The test, on people death from 20 years, is done with the femur.

Unfortunately, that is what ' sells ' -- let us see what the outcome is.

And here we go again, more sensationalist nonsense... This is the logical follow-up of the E-M35 Hitler story (that is to say, because they couldn't label him a Jew, they had to turn towards Eva Braun).

I need not say that this is very unlikely to be true, given that Hitler had all of her ancestors checked.

Seriously, I am starting to find this strange urge to label nazis "Jewish" very disturbing and kind of creepy (especially for someone who actually lost family members during the Holocaust).
It's almost as if some cannot forgive us for dying at the hands of their forefathers, so they aspire to judaize these key-figures in order to exonerate themselves and turn these genocidal idols into self-hating jews... Very disturbing indeed.

Same here, I know this because in order to find my maternal grandfather's Y-DNA I even thought about testing his (deceased) brother's hair... Unfortunately, the hair roots had disappeared, thus the whole thing suddenly turned into a futile exercise.

So not only does the story's premise sound outlandish, that the means being referred to are highly suspicious.

Adolf Hitler, the anti-Semitic Nazi German leader responsible for the murder of millions of Jews, could have unwittingly married a Jew hours before committing suicide in his Berlin bunker in 1945.

DNA analysis of hair samples from a hairbrush claimed to belong to Eva Braun, Hitler’s long-term lover who married the fascist dictator shortly before the couple killed themselves at the end of World War II, shows that it contained the hair of someone who could have had Jewish ancestry.

The revelation appears in a new Channel 4 documentary series, Dead Famous DNA, in which Mark Evans sets out to track down the remains of some of history’s most famous figures, including Elvis Presley, John F Kennedy and Napoleon. Leading scientists then attempt to extract DNA from the relics and analyse their genome to solve mysteries associated with them.

In the final programme of the series - which airs on Wednesday, April 9th on Channel 4 – an international team of forensic scientists sequenced the hypervariable region of the mitochondrial DNA from a sample of hairs claimed to belong to Eva Braun.

The hairs have a strong provenance: they came from a monogrammed hairbrush found at the end of the Second World War in Eva Braun’s apartment at Hitler’s Alpine residence, the Berghof in Bavaria, by an American army intelligence officer.

Eva Braun fell madly in love with Hitler at just 17-years-old, although he was twenty-three years her senior. Concerned it would affect his image, Hitler refused to marry Eva and kept her a state secret, hidden away at his mountain-top residence, the Berghof, in the Bavarian Alps.

In the summer of 1945 Paul Baer, a US 7th Army captain, was posted to the Berghof. Working for the precursor of the CIA, Baer had privileged access to Hitler’s former retreat and took personal items, including the hairbrush, from Eva Braun’s private apartment. There are photographs of Baer at the Berghof in 1945 and the hairbrush has been authenticated by experts.

After the war, Baer returned to the US with the hairbrush, as well as other items. “In our basement I remember there was a duffel bag and in the duffel bag there were several Nazi ceremonial daggers, a human skull and this case with the initials in gold ‘E.B.’,” says Baer’s son Alan. “We opened it up and there was a mirror and a hairbrush. It was just a cosmetic box in a duffel bag brought from Hitler’s home.”

Paul Baer’s own family background makes the story all the more poignant. “My father was a German-born Jew who came to America in 1929,” says Alan Baer. “Because of his background he was in the CIC, which was a forerunner of the CIA, and he was allowed to go to these places. When the concentration camps were liberated he was allowed to go into them. His mother and two sisters were taken to the camps. He never found them.”

But Alan Baer is keen that the hair is studied and the story told. “I just think you have to get over the emotional aspects of it,” he says. “Now what’s left is her hair and that can be used for science and history and that’s more important than sitting there being upset about the hair being there. What good is that going to do?”

On his father’s death in the 1970s, Alan Baer sold Braun’s hairbrush to a relic dealer who separated the hair and sold it on to hair dealer John Reznikoff. Mark Evans purchased eight strands of the hair from Reznikoff for two thousand dollars. The hair was then sent to an international team of forensic scientists for analysis.

The scientists’ analysis revealed something unexpected and extraordinary. They found a specific sequence within the mitochondrial DNA, a small genome within the mitochondria of the cell that is passed down the maternal line from mother to daughter unchanged over the generations, belonging to haplogroup N1b1, which is strongly associated with Ashkenazi Jews (a haplogroup is a particular sequence of mitochondrial DNA which is passed down the maternal line).

80% of the world’s Jewish population is Ashkenazi, descended from medieval Jews who lived in central Europe, having first settled in The Rhineland. In the nineteenth century, many Ashkenazi Jews in Germany converted to Catholicism, so Eva Braun is highly unlikely to have known her ancestry and – despite research he instigated into Braun’s race - neither would Hitler.

The provenance of the hair is strong, but to definitively prove that it came from Eva Braun’s head, Mark Evans attempted to get a DNA swab from one of Eva Braun’s two surviving female descendants, but both refused. So an element of mystery remains.

“This is a thought-provoking outcome - I never dreamt that I would find such a potentially extraordinary and profound result,” says Mark Evans. “Racism & Fascism – ideas that one racial group is superior to another – made a mockery of by studying dead famous DNA.”

The final part of Dead Famous DNA will be shown on Channel 4 on Wednesday, April 9th at 9pm. Made by Double Act productions, it is produced, written and directed by Rob Davis. The executive producer is Alistair Cook.

N1b2 is the type found among Ashkenazi due to the founder effect. N1b1 could be from anywhere at anytime. It's about as Ashkenazi as Hitler's E1b1b1a2.

I have not made any comments regarding the haplogroup -- all quotes and headlines are from the Australian newspaper and channel 4 U.K.

I posted the articles so that members are aware of them - nothing more ...so please read things carefully.

‘Dead Famous DNA’ says Eva Braun’s hair features ‘Ashkenazi’ genetic sequence; same show bought fake Hitler hair from Holocaust-denier

The same British TV show that recently bought what turned out to be a fake lock of Adolf Hitler’s hair for intended DNA testing now claims Hitler’s girlfriend of 12 years and wife of 40 hours, Eva Braun, may have had Jewish ancestry, based on DNA testing performed on ostensible hairs from her toothbrush.

The Channel 4 show Dead Famous DNA, which tests the genetic material of historical figures such as Elvis Presley, Charles Darwin, John F. Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, and Napoleon, acquired the hairs from specialist dealer John Reznikoff. They are said to have come from personal belongings found in Braun’s private apartment after the war.

The hairs reportedly came from a monogrammed hairbrush found at Braun’s Bavarian residence by American army intelligence officer Paul Baer, a US 7th Army captain, who had privileged access to the property and took a number of items from the flat.

Photographs taken at Berghof in 1945 show him with the hairbrush.

Baer’s son Alan said his father had kept the items in a duffel bag in the basement of the family’s home. After his death in the 1970s, his son sold the items to Reznikoff — who then sold them to Dead Famous DNA presenter Mark Evans for 1,200, or nearly $2000.

After the hairs were acquired, a genetic analysis by a team of scientists on the show revealed that Braun, the Aryan poster girl, may have had Jewish ancestry on her mother’s side. In DNA from the hair, they found a sequence passed down through the maternal line — haplogroup N1b1 — which was “strongly associated” with Ashkenazi Jews.

Ashkenazi Jews dispersed into central and eastern Europe in the early Middle Ages, and some converted to Catholicism in Germany in the 19th century.

“This is a thought-provoking outcome — I never dreamt that I would find such a potentially extraordinary and profound result,” presenter Evans said of the findings.

Nevertheless, the conclusions are not definitive, and Braun’s two surviving female relatives refused to give DNA samples to confirm that the hairs were really Braun’s own.

Braun became Hitler’s lover in the early 1930s, while the latter’s Nazi power was gaining substantial influence in the German political arena. She married him in a small civil ceremony in his Berlin bunker just after midnight on April 29, 1945. The two committed suicide the next day, on April 30 — two days before the city’s defenders surrendered to the advancing Red Army. Hitler was 56 years old, and Braun was 33. They had been married for less than 40 hours.

The episode concerning Braun will air in the UK Wednesday.

In March, Channel 4 and the same documentary show came under fire for buying a lock of hair allegedly belonging to Hitler from a convicted Holocaust-denying historian, only to discover that the relic was a fake.

The TV station paid 3,000 ($4,957) to David Irving, who is barred from entering Austria, Germany, Italy, and Canada for his writings on World War II that deny the atrocities perpetrated by the Third Reich.

News of the acquisition drew sharp condemnation from Labor MP Ian Austin, whose father’s family perished in the Treblinka death camp. Austin referred to the buy as “sick,” “tawdry,” and “bizarre.”

“It’s disgusting, and raises questions about Channel 4’s public broadcasting remit,” he said, according to a report Sunday in Britain’s Daily Mirror.

Upon scrutiny, the lock of hair, claimed to have been acquired from Hitler’s barber who gathered it using sticky tape attached to the sole of his shoe, turned out to be inauthentic.

Marissa Newman contributed to this report.

Earlier today I had a chat with Bennett Greenspan (https://www.familytreedna.com/ ) regarding N1b1.

Bennett Greenspan said " a very few N1b1's are jewish and that I would have to see the signature "
