So I used GEDMATCH for my grandmother's DNA with her permission. On her AncestryDNA she is Scottish, English/NW Europe, Irish, Wales and Finland. previously she had some French and East Asian in her Ancestry DNA test, now she does not. Her communities are clustered in New England American settlers and Canadian settlers. She says she thought she was Scottish and English, and of course, like all white Americans, has a Native American story in her family. She was also surprised to hear that her family once settled in Canada.
Her specific communities: Early New England
Vermont, New Hampshire and Central Massachusetts
Early Connecticut and New York Settlers
Southwestern Quebec, New York and Vermont French Settlers
and Door Peninsula Wisconsin French Settlers

Here are some of her GEDMATCH results:

How am I supposed to interpret the Indian, Mediterranean, West Asian and the East Asian/Siberian/Arctic Amerindian? Some of these are small enough to be statistical noise, but I'm not sure. Where would my grandmother have gotten Mediterranean or West Asian? Are those just ancient populations? And does the Arctic Amerindian or Siberian mean something in the context of my grandmother's Native American story? There are Inuit and Arctic Natives in Canada where some of her family was from. Or, because my grandmother has a small percentage of Finland on AncestryDNA is it from something like Saami ancestry? Also, a lot of these reference populations are confusing because I wouldn't have thought my grandmother had ancestry from all these places. I need help interpreting this.

Thank you.

Typical Northwest European results. It is not unusual for people with deep Scottish and/or Irish ancestry to get low levels of East-Asian, South-Asian, Siberian, Native-American etc in these tests. Basically, it is just an indication that in addition to ancestry from continental Europe, some lines of your grandmothers ancestors have lived in Scottland/Ireland for several thousands years.

I don’t think it infers deep Irish or Scottish ancestry. Many people all over Europe score some East Asian, Siberian or Amerindian. It could mean something or it could not. Northern Europeans and Asians are very distantly related and have had some contact throughout history.

West Asian on K13 is normal throughout Europe since it is ancient and not modern. For more insights you should check the West Asian averages throughout Europe, though you may be slightly above or below average for your ethnicities.

Given that she did get some Finnish on AncestryDNA, there’s a chance a little of her DNA could come from somewhere like Finland (or perhaps Scandinavia or Russia). Ancestry has a tendency to not include less certain ethnicities, although it isn’t perfect. Does she have matches from any of these countries?

Although, I get 0% Finnish and the following:
South_Asian 0.56 Pct
East_Asian -
Siberian 1.88 Pct
Amerindian 0.39 Pct
Oceanian 0.14 Pct

She does not have matches from Finland because Finland only comes in around 1%. So I'm not even sure if that's definite.
Maybe it's just showing similarities between those ethnicities and European populations because they're distantly related, then?

A lot of people from Eastern Europe, and not just Saami, have a tiny bit of real Asian admixture. Sometimes it’s Central Asian or Siberian. Sometimes this admixture is from colonial times.

Not sure where I get all the ‘Asian’ from. It could be real or it may not be. Judging by my family’s history in port cities e.g. Liverpool, it could be from pretty much anywhere if real.

I hope you find the source of your Asian admixture, if itís not super ancient. Yeah. All the stuff you mentioned could totally be the source of what it is.

She has lowish North Atlantic and highish West Asian - for her known ancestry. I thought she was mostly German, as I glanced at her K13 before I read the opening post.

To answer the question, this strange looking mixture you see, that is just normal for everyone. It is the balance/proportion of these elements that gives the clues to one's ancestry.

Thank you for the reply! Yeah, I was talking to her today, and I did a little research on the Anglo-Saxons, who supposedly came from Germany and the Netherlands, etc. Is it possible the "German" is just that, since she is a significant portion English?
