I think mainly when we are happy or hear something jollyful. It is also one way to show friendlyness towards others. Sometimes it is a way to be noticed by someone. It does rise you up from the boring situation too and show you are alive :)

As a child I used to laugh when I was in trouble for being naughty, which got me into more trouble.

Even now I laugh when I shouldn`t.
