This is a fun, great 6 minute explanation of a graphic made in 1862 that gives tons of info and insight into the disaster...

My 4th g-grandfather Adam Crauss (R1b-L2) was a Hessian in Napoleon's Grand Army and supposedly watched Moscow burn and survived the retreat. I've been looked for records from the Hesse-Rotenburg military hoping to find some clue as to how he survived, but have not found anything. In the study that Rich linked to on the mass burial in Kassell they state that many of the military records from the Napoleon era were destroyed in WW2.
