I am comparing two DNA kits on GEDmatch. We are siblings but are we whole or half siblings. We have after 68 long years of questions, completed our DNA test and I am not able to interpret the results with a definite answer. Could someone help me please? I will be so grateful!

Hi Siblescreek

Since no one responded I will take a stab at your question. I am assuming you both have the same mother and your father is one the question. Since you are female, Y dna does not help. You received half your DNA from your mother and half from your father. It could be you and your sibling received exactly the same DNA or you each received the opposite halves that the other did not receive so the result does not provide an exact answer and it depends somewhat on chance. In you case you do have a significant match and are likely to be full siblings, but you need to to look at the chromosome plots to see how much is a full match, how much is half a match and where there is no match. Any significant full match, even if on just a few chromosomes, indicates your fathers are the same individual or were related. Obviously the higher the amount and size of the full match the more likely you are full siblings. If you are both females also, make sure to look at the X since you both should have gotten essentially an identical X chromosome from your father and also some matching (with your sibling) X from your mother. If there is a significant area where you do not have even a half match, you are most likely half siblings. If you had separate fathers but they were close relatives such as brothers it could also perhaps appear as though you are full sibling even though you are not.
