Study Says that People are Inclined to Help Others--but the Longer They Wait the Less Likely They are To Do So (http://www.latimes.com/news/science/la-sci-generous-or-selfish-20120920,0,4468031.story)

Thats is true. I have noticed same just recently. One woman asked my help for packing her things to move. I was working then and could not promise right away help because of many other things. I said I can help next week. Now I have difficulties to reach her by phone. It really shows that you should help nearly instantly although of your busy timetable and even tiredness. But helping is giving a lot when you can do it freely and feel it is not so difficult.

I don't know about the OP. Maybe a tight-knit society has that kind of phenomenon?

Outside of your job, it's probably a good idea to help when someone actually specifies it from you. Unsolicited/uncoordinated involvement that you think is help =/= help.
