Hello everyone,

Various SNPs have been implicated by various studies as having a correlation to sun sensitivity, melanin production, and melanoma risk.

My goal is to group all the SNPs from the various studies into one spreadsheet, and either attempt to validate any correlation to the aforementioned, or perhaps at the very least attempt to determine whether there is an observable pattern. After inputting and organizing the data, my goal is to upload the spreadsheet, so that contributing members can draw their own conclusions. In addition to the spreadsheet, I will attempt to list the risk allele values for the SNPs.

Meaningful conclusions can be formed if there is enough participants, with varying sun sensitivities, and skin tones.

I will need the following information for the spreadsheet:

1. The memberís ethnicity;
2. The memberís eye color. Pick one of the following colors which is closest to your eye color:
a. Blue
b. Green
c. Hazel
d. Light Brown
e. Dark Brown
3. The memberís sun sensitivity. Please refer to the attached Fitzpatrick Sun Sensitivity chart to determine your sun sensitivity;3154
4. The memberís skin tone. Please confirm that your skin tone is comparable to one of the subjects on the Fitzpatrick chart;
5. The memberís hair color. Please pick one of the following; Lt. blonde, dk blonde, red, light brown, medium brown, dark brown, and black;
6. The memberís alleles for the following SNPs. I realize that most members, myself included, do not have results for all the SNPs listed:

I updated the Fitzpatrick chart with one that I believe to be slightly more accurate, and also modified paragraph 4. Please confirm that the changes do not affect your results.

Sun sensitivity just barely ended up Type III with that one (mainly due to my complete lack of freckles). I updated my post accordingly.

Ancestry DNA did not test quite a few of my relevant SNPs. My dad and daughter's results are pending from 23andme in about 3 weeks. I will post them upon receipt.

I also used my 23andMe results, missing four SNPs. Dunno if maybe it depends on chip version; mine's pretty recent, so on the v4 chip.

However, I just realised it might be a good idea to check my FTDNA raw data as well - and sure enough, all but one remaining SNPs were genotyped there. I edited the genotypes in.

I agree, it appears to be a relevant SNP. Ancestry DNA did not test my sample for that SNP. I am not able to edit my original post anymore, since my time window has apparently closed. Any suggestions, besides asking for it separately from each member.

Maybe a world-editable Google Sheet? You could transfer data from it to an authoritative world-readable but non-editable copy or somesuch, from time to time.

Maybe a world-editable Google Sheet? You could transfer data from it to an authoritative world-readable but non-editable copy or somesuch, from time to time.

Just a heads up, the first time I did this, I simply copied and pasted the snp's that you gave me, and only 1 of 6 came back with a result...the 5 that did not have 'rs' in front of them came back as no data, but I was suspicious and checked the other guys results and it became obvious all I had to do was put 'rs in front of the 5 I 'did'nt' have and presto...I did have them

-so for the other guys that are as slow as I am, make sure you put an rs in front of the 5 that dont have it

in any case, this is what I did have

Thanks Mike, I will update. I think the rest of the members were ok, except, mine were missing about 5, since I used Ancestry DNA. I will post the table as soon as I have my dad's and daughter's results from 23andme, which I expect to receive the first week of January.

I will try to post the spreadsheet over the next week with whatever info I have. The spreadsheet will basically organize whatever the members had posted. The members will have to refer to other published papers or websites for any health significance of mutations, or allele values.

I am not sure what testing company you used, but 23andMe reports on almost all of those SNPs. Make sure you type rs before the SNP.

Thanks for this. Interesting results. I wish there was more information on rs1042602 other than just an absence of freckles for the A allele. Can't seem to find any other purpose for it though.
