Big Y results: the VCF file

A member of one of the surname projects I manage has his Big Y results. I'm looking over his VCF. It's pretty straight forward, the positions and alleles are listed. But two questions: These are variants from what? From positions and values that are presently known and classified? The other question, What are the values in the ALT column?
