View Full Version : Post your 23andMe Countries of Ancestry Matches

One of the tools offered by 23andMe is the Countries of Ancestry. I believe that this database has been considerably updated since 2012/2013 to include more individuals. For those who have not checked in a while you may want to visit it again.

I noticed in a 2012 thread started by DMXX, some Asian members had mentioned that they were not getting many Asian matches. Well, I got 8 Indian hits & 1 Pakistani hit using 1gp, and >5cM, so I believe the S. Asian members should get many more than I did.

I also got 14 Iranian, 8 Iraqi, & 8 Turkish hits using the same criteria, so the Western Asia members may want to re-visit to see if they have more matches now.

Surprisingly, I also got 10+ Russian hits. Since Russia is a large country, I am curious which parts of Russia those individuals are associated with.

To get your table, do the following: click on My Results -- Ancestry Tools -- Countries of Ancestry -- Show Advanced Controls -- select 1 grand parent -- move slider to 5cM --Download CSV -- Sort the spreadsheet to group countries -- Copy & Paste the spreadsheet into the message body.

Here are my results:

Ah! looks fun I have 878+relatives golly it would be crazy to copy & paste

That was the reason that I narrowed it down to countries where I had the most matches. I also left out US matches, since I was not able to determine their countries of origin. :)

Zahra or any S. Asian or W. Asian member,

To get an idea of the size of the south asian and west asian database, I was curious as to how many matches you get from India Afghanistan Pakistan and Iran with gp1+, and overlap>5cM.

Thanks :)

That is quiet impressive. You are showing about:

- 20X Afghanistan
- 7X India
- 9X Pakistan
- 6X Iran

What I did to make it easier to group countries in the spreadsheet was:

I highlighted the paternal grandfather column, and sorted it A to Z. Then I used the "Find" function in excel to find the entries that were not part of the country groups.

It is good to see that there is quiet a few individuals with Afghan and Pakistani ancestry in the database. It seems you also have a few matches with Russian ancestry. It would be interesting to find out which parts of Russia they are associated with.

I didn't hide the Russian matches because I saw you mention them!!! Its interesting tho' I sorted using the maternal grandmother as a pivot .

I couldn't find a good way to copy the list or condense it (I have 1000+ matches) but the gist of it:

United Kingdom x 146
Ireland x 57
Germany x 27
Russia x 15
Finland x 14
Netherlands x 14
Norway x 14

Unsurprisingly, there are a good number of individuals with UK ancestry in the database.

Is the UK were most of your recent ancestry (-10 generations) are from. What is the size of your largest shared segment with a match?

Thanks

I took out just the anonymous users who were from US and UK and no other countries. Otherwise you can get an idea by name or other countries listed.

Most of my recent ancestry does seem to be from the UK and Ireland. My largest shared segment is a 16.1 cM match with someone from Ireland (No name given), my second largest is a 15.2 cM match with a British woman named Paula Baynes

Thanks that was quiet informative. I had stripped out the match names from my table that were not anonymous. I can PM them to you if you like.

I guess I am a little surprised that I have about 8 matches showing up with 1+ Indian gp on my results, and you showing about 16 matches with Indian gp, considering that you are from the India region. I am a little curious what area of India Anonymous0574 is associated with as he/she is showing 8cM shared with me, and showing at least 3 Indian gps. Anonymous0242 shares 6cM with me.

I have total 32 matches on Relative Finder and 6 or 7 of them are European, the rest appear to be South Asian.

I think South Indians and North Indians (Uttar Pradesh area) usually get a lot of other South Asian matches.

I would also like to see the K7s for some of my S Asian matches. I have never really made any effort to contact any matches.

Curiously, my daughter who is 3/4 Kurd, 1/4 Punjabi does not show many more S Asian matches than me. She has the same number of Indian matches, although, strangely I share a larger segment with the Indian than she does (8 vs. 6.3cM). I guess I should get my wife tested to see what her results are. She is 1/2 Kurd, 1/2 Punjabi (Rajput).

My daughter does have 2 more Pakistani matches than me.

I removed all of my North American and nearly all of my European matches. I have few Ukrainian and Polish matches but I don't have any Russians. I also had like over 7 Italian matches, I dunno where did that came from lol. I have 4 Kuwaiti matches, 3 of them are of confirmed Iranian ancestry. The Fourth person might also have Iranian ancestry because of his last name but I didn't contact him yet.

I had quiet a few more Turkish & Iraqi matches. They are probably all Kurds, except for a couple of Iraqi matches which were Yezidi.

I had also many Russian matches, which is kind of expected since I have a little more WHG, N/E Eurasian, and less SW Asian than you.

But, I am a little surprised that you did not have as many Indian matches, since we usually score similar on Indian admixture components. Maybe you missed a couple of them in the spreadsheet. I used the find function to look for the populations in my spreadsheet.

I had a lot of matches with undeclared ancestry so that could be the reason. I think some of my matches from Turkey are Kurdish too.

I agree, based on your admixture results, they are most likely Kurds. I also had quite a few undeclared ancestry.

My percentages on countries of ancestry are:

INDIA: 0.3 - 0.5%
IRAN: 0.6 - 1.8%
IRAQ: 0.5 - 0.8%
PAKISTAN: 0.2%

Between June 2014 and today, there are a lot of changes!
Without I understand why!
I lost more than half people having their 4GP American..
Here are my maps by number of segments by country (having 4GP of the same country):

you guys , should use this below on the files you downloaded from 23andme

it will show who matches who , that also matches you

http://kittymunson.com/dna/SegmentMapper.php

btw, there is not enough colours , so you will see clear areas ( no colours ) noted.
Just cut done the list you received

or you can use the same file for each chromosome with this below
http://kittymunson.com/dna/OneChromosomeMapper.php
