For all data miners out there, public R-L217[.1] number nine has turned up.

He is FamilyTreeDNA kit# 230795.

For completeness, here are the other eight public R-L217[.1] FamilyTreeDNA Kit #'s:

2599
23545
53595
194170
232315
206551
N50419
N87046

I would recommend that people with the following surnames and who belong to haplogroup R-U106 also test for SNP L217 from FamilyTreeDNA 'Advanced Tests': Goodson, Hickman, King, Manning and Pitts.

Congratulations, Clinton.

Is there anything you could post that would look like "the story of L217" ? What is known about the history of the SNP ??

BTW, do all L217+ have their geographic origin defined in their FT-DNA profile ??

The story of L217 is still a little uncertain. There appears to be three distinct ‘flavours’ headed by: Lovell, Modling and the remainder.

Lovell appears to be out on his own.

Modling appears to be associated with Hickman, King, Manning and Pitts.

The remainder are Francis, Goodson, Kirk, Lovell, Mallett, Platt, Smith and Walker.

An analysis of surnames alone would indicate that L217 is English. However, two of the above claim French ancestry, and one has Romany Gypsy ancestry. Examining the surnames at ‘worldnames public profiler’ gives a distribution in the form of an approximate linear swathe from the SW of England to the English Midlands. Most L217 currently in the United States of America appears to date back to early colonisation (mid 1600’s to mid 1700’s).

There have been various calculations as to the age of L217, and most give an age not much younger than U106 itself. This fits in, given the high level of STR variance within the known L217 haplotypes. Assuming the age of L217 is slightly less than U106, I expect that L217 would be found on the continent.

The only off-modal marker that remains consistently the same in all the L217 haplotypes is DYS520=21. As a consequence, potential candidates, can only be detected if they have at least 67 markers.

Other unusual markers that have at least one occurrence within L217 haplotypes are DYS390=21, YCAIIa/b=19/22, DYS425=null, DYS617=11 and DYS492=14.

Hello, just joined this forum.I was surfing the web to find out about my L217 and came across this forum, that also had my kit number. It is 66355,Absolum B. King.Even though I belong to FTDNA,I still don't understand much about the whole DNA,thing.
I joined FTDNA,in hopes that it would get me past my GGGrandfather,Absolum B. King. All it has done id make it MORE complicated. Now,they come up with the L217 and that is purely beyond me.The moderator of the Kings on FTDNA,is of absolutely NO help.He assumes that everybody knows as much about DNA,as he does. Not the case.Anyway,I wanted to tell you,my first cousin,Bobby King, kit # 172900,also took the DNA test.I thought that we'd match,100%.Not the case. The moderator told me that even brothers don't match 100%,all the time. That sure doesn't help my case. Here's my problem.I match more Pitts, than Kings.I cannot test Bobby as he passed away 1 month after taking the test.Does anybody on here know anything that may help me,or could get me a little more knowledgeable about this DNA.FTDNA sure as heck hevent helped. Thanks,Terry (male)

FullGenomes is reporting 259 "private" non-INDEL SNPs. These 259 SNPs have 4 different levels of quality from 0 to 3 stars (*), with *** being the least reliable. The breakdown of my 259 SNPs is as follows:

Quality

Likely Genuine?

Count

No *'s

Over 99%

13

*

Over 95%

14

**

About 40%

57

***

About 10%

175

FullGenomes considers those with 0* or 1* as high quality, and reports that they have found 27 high quality private SNPs in my Y-DNA. These new SNPs were named FG979 to FG1003 and PR495.

In terms of INDELs, they found 38 private INDELs of which 3 are high quality.

I am Kit # 66355,my 1st cousin Bobby Kit # 172900.We are in the King family.I got Bobbys DNA just before he passed on.I know practically NOTHING about DNA.I know that we don't match any Kings,at all.We do match a BUNCH of Pitts and especially since a man in the Pitts family checked for R-L217 Myself and MANY others have tried to go farther back on the family tree.I thought that I would blow it out of the water when I did the DNA test at FTDNA.It just seems to have made it a lot harder since I don't understand all the DNA stuff. My GGgrandfather,Absolum B. King was b. 1805 in S.C. nothing is known of him between 1805 and the 1830's.I have contacted the administrators on both the Pitts and King sides,NO HELP.I'm really hoping that somebody on here can be of help.Thank-you

Clinton,

Have you considered trying to recruit some/any of these L217.1 guys to either test for some of your 27 "private" SNPs (or alternately take a NGS test)?

Also, the PR series of SNPs are SNPs originally found by Thomas Krahn when he did WTY type of testing on some Primate DNA (with PR495 coming from a chimpanzee). Given the fact some folks may feel offended to be "labelled" as a primate SNP, YSEQ gladly renames these SNPs when you request them (through their "Wish-A-SNP")

I live in Ohio,my Kings live in Georgia.I don't know any male Kings. The only ones that I met when I went down there are all now dead.
Terry
P.S. By the way,the Kings down there are VERY clanish, they don't take to strangers even if they are blood.
