One hundred twenty thousand saiga antelope recently died in Kazakhstan of a mysterious disease. This represents about half of the recent saiga antelope population in Kazakhstan, and Kazakhstan held 90 percent of the world's saiga antelope population before this major die-off. My guess is that this remnant of the species must have lost too much of its genetic diversity and is extremely vulnerable to extinction via a virus. This antelope was a staple of hunter gatherers in the Central Asian steppe.
