why such varied results?

Is your ancestry from continental Europe rather than UK/Ireland? I also wouldn't use standard mode, it's not the most informative. Use speculative, even with the predictions, you will have a better idea with guess work than generic categories which are next to useless.

As far as I know...my family has strong irish scottish ancestry...with names like McGinnis and scottish clan names on my dads side
