My Blog mtDNA Atlas (http://mtdnaatlas.blogspot.com/) is solely about amateur mtDNA research. There isn't a lot of high coverage mtDNA data online outside of Ian Logans' websites.

So, I'm asking for anyone who's had their mtDNA tested to please email me your mtDNA data to my email: [email protected] You can also post your data on this thread. If you don't know how to send/find your data post your questions here.

If you tested for 23andme you can also: Make an account at OpenSNP (https://opensnp.org)and upload your DNA file. Ian Logan will then add your mtDNA data to his database here. (https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=ian%20logan%20opensnp) I suggest sending me your email first because eit might take a while for Ian Logan to add your data to his database.

I'll tell you if you where your lineage is most popular, if you have any close matches, if you have matches in ancient mtDNA, if you're apart of an unclassified branch etc. I started a "User's mtDNA (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18sDtDhgzHScP2_vO6NlfR2rBqefF78JE6bYHZO39WNA/edit#gid=0)" spreadsheet today.

My father is T1a1

H5 is a decently popular subclade of H in West Asia and Europe. It's was well represented in Early Neolithic Europeans 7,500 years ago. Most H5 in Europe is H5a and most H5 in West Asia is not H5a. More specifically most European H5 is H5a1 and your H5a2 is very rare. It's about 4% in Spain in my data and roughly the same in most of West Eurasia. The oldest examples H5s tested at high coverage come from Corded Ware, Bell Beaker, and Karsuk(Bronze age Siberia). Corded Ware was H5a1, Bell Beaker was H5a3, and Karasuk was H5a1.

T1a1 may be a European-specfic form of T1a but I'm not sure. The majority of T1a in Europe is T1a1. T1a is about 1% in Spain but I don't have data from Portugal. It peaks in the SouthWest Asia, Iran, and the Volga/Ural at around 4%. It's next most popular in the Balkans and East Europe at about 3%.. The oldest examples of T1a come from Early Neolithic Europe(about 7500 years old) but it was very rare. T1a was more popular in Bronze age "Steppe" people and I suspect much of T1a in Europe today ultimately descends from them.

The only Ancient T1as to be tested at high coverage come from Corded Ware(2600 BC), Late Neolithic Karsdorf Germany(2500 BC), and Bronze age Armenia(1000 BC. The one from Corded Ware was T1a1-3(prob T1a1), Karsdorf was T1a1, and the one from Armenia T1a2. The Karsdorf guy was estimated to have 70%+ Yamnaya ancestry, so his T1a probably came from the "Steppe".

I am H5r which is pretty rare. Some was found in a study into Alzheimers in northern Italy and the only commercial tester I've come across is a native Pole (who didn't reply). My mitochondrial MDKA is from near Sleaford in Lincolnshire which is a well known Roman settlement and has a large Roman cemetery. Just saying ... :-)

I only know (vague ly) that my grandmother's mother was most likely from Sarajevo. I don't have any other information on her family because she didn't grow up with them.

Ask Krefter for help here, he is very much into it. Get her aDNA tested and look for matches, Ancestory.com may be best, 23andMe be good as you can also transfer from there to FTDNA, or at least do the Family Finder. Don't forget to join the Gedmatch.com, for free tools there.

Yes, it should be essentially the same if she is your mother's mother. Having the aDNA done at Ancestory or at 23andMe gives you access to the data at two companies after transfer, but the file format have to be transferable first. Too late for that, or for another time anyway as I've already sent out her sample to ftdna. I've been their customer since 2003 so I guess I never thought of sending it elsewhere. Maybe if I send my mother's I'll use a different company if I can also transfer data to ftdna.

I have been too chicken to send anything to Ian Logan personally. I seem to have a magical haplogroup that defies definition in the current phylotree build. No company or raw data reader seems to agree except that I must be within the H quarter. It has been recommended however that I am transitioning between HV to H, or H to H?!?... Considering the popularity of H it seems a bit silly.

I'm an H1, not terribly exciting. ;) However, my full subclade at FTDNA is H1J2A which Phylo.Org reports as common in western Europe and the Basque. That seems a little more exciting as the Basque strike me as somewhat mysterious folk with their non-IE language. I've wondered if the J2A component could have any correlation to the YDNA Anatolian group. However, FTDNA says that it is mere randomness. That sounds like a contender for a good survey competition. :) Sadly, I would surely lose as my confidence level would only be 3 generations back thus far. Ironically, my grandmother's maiden surname of Gaskins possibly has origins in Gascogne region of France which I believe is near Basque territory. However, in looking at my FTDNA matches map, these ladies really traveled. :)

I see that your MtDNA has a similar interesting dispersion from Wales to Latvia per the Eupedia website:

B) I was hoping he could tell me after he announced that he found a red hair trait. But I hope that he or anyone else who carries on the MtDNA research finds more rare & exciting lines than my ubiquitous H1.
