View Full Version : Interesting case of a South Arabian J1 subclade present in a non-mixed looking Somali

So the Sheikh has a J1 ethnic Somali relative whose raw data he's in possession of and intriguingly enough, this guy's been tested via FTDNA and is part of the J1 project (He's on the 5th page here (https://www.familytreedna.com/public/J-M267/default.aspx?section=yresults) as "alisaeed" with the kit no. N93003). He's paternally & maternally mostly of the Somali Warsangli (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warsangali) subclan of the Darod (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darod) clan & is basically from Erigavo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erigavo) from what he tells me.

But that's not what's interesting here... He autosomally shows no signs of being part non-Somali:

And here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14vLewIh3LzALhj_Ib15CSx-DvtkcxW4KSWbwJL5B1gI/edit#gid=970863214) you can compare him to about 40 other ethnic Somalis whose ANE K=7 results I gathered. I'm SOM1, he's SOM5 and my friend whose results I've been sharing alongside ours is SOM2.

No matter what you do; this guy always looks like a maxed out Somali... No non-Somali relatives either... He only ever seemed off with that one Oracle-4 result from Eurogenes K=13 (25% Amhara result) but all the other results make that seem like a mere hick-up. I even tried to use Gedmatch's chromosome painting option for admixture proportions as an Eritrean-Tigrinya (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tigray-Tigrinya_people)friend told me that he managed to spot that he has distant Nilo-Saharan ancestry by looking into this one chromosome of his where he kept showing a big chunk of "Nilo-Saharan" or something along those lines (he managed to back this up with at least one admixture run where his "Nilo-Saharan" levels were a smidgen off the norm for other Tigrinyas). But this guy's results when using this option for either the Jtest or even K=36 don't stand out much. I show more "Arabian" in K=36 than he does for example but I'll keep looking and look into other forms of analysis.

However his J1 subclade is J1-ZS8629 as per the J1 Project which is extremely reliable according to a hombre of mine who knows a lot about it... In fact here are some of that hombre's comments via PM so you'll have some idea of the story behind this subclade:

http://oi58.tinypic.com/3355nbp.jpg

http://oi57.tinypic.com/whlca1.jpg

http://oi61.tinypic.com/21cfnzb.jpg

http://oi57.tinypic.com/nx6zxg.jpg

So... What do you think? From what I know this guy is not aware of any non-Somali ancestry within the last several generations however I've recently asked him to review his paternal line's genealogy (Somalis do tend to keep one, in my experience, my family does for one) and see if there's anything off. But would you say this is a sign of some old Ethio-Semitic admixture in Somalis that he's only showing via his paternal marker and that this marker is tied with the spread of Ethiopian Semitic or is the less adventurous "He got it from a very old Yemenite of this obscure tribe paternal ancestor" explanation more plausible to you?

In the meantime it'd be interesting if any Horn Africans who're J1 who also might be part of the J1 project could step forward if they have a similar subclade going as that would lessen the chances that this is due to non-Horn African admixture from the last few hundred years. Anyone who might know more about this subclade could chime in too?

We had a new article about a prehistoric genome of the Ethiopian Mota cave this week. West Eurasian admixture related to Early Neolithic farmers or pastoralists can be found throughout Africa and especially in East Africa where some of that admixture can be related to haplogroups like J1 and they arrived via Yemen and Southern Arabia to Somalia.

Well, I don't know the implications of using 67 markers to calculate TMRCA, nor do I know the reliability of using STR values for such a purpose; perhaps you or someone else can elaborate on this. Nonetheless, the results I got when I ran his numbers alongside Khawlanis was a TMRCA estimate between 800-1300 years ago to kit #M8486, and everyone else that I used between 900-1700 years ago on this calculator (http://www.mymcgee.com/tools/yutility111.html). I also ran a 111 marker Khawlani to your cousin and the most distant TMRCA I got between them was 1400 years ago.

I think what we can get out of these results is that deeper SNP testing between him and kit #M8486 is needed, before speculating about ancient migrations. Because if this calculator is on to something, then his TMRCA might be between 800-1400 years ago to one of the Khawlanis, which is fairly recent. So while I don't know about the accuracy of this tool, it helps by reminding us that its best to remain skeptical until more data is produced.

Big Y would certainly be useful in delineating the exact nature of the relationship between your cousin and the Khawlani cases... And in relation to what King said, I tend not to put much faith in TMRCA estimates based on STR values.

Hm, not necessarily. We'll need more ancient data to say for sure.

West Eurasian admixture related to Early Neolithic farmers or pastoralists can be found throughout Africa and especially in East Africa where some of that admixture can be related to haplogroups like J1 and they arrived via Yemen and Southern Arabia to Somalia.

I'm aware of that study but in respect to Horn Africans; it shared nothing new. We've always known that Somalis, Habeshas (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habesha_people), Agaws (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agaw_people) ("Afar" samples (http://anthromadness.blogspot.ae/2014/12/afar-samples-from-autosomal-dna-studies.html) & Ethiopian Jews (http://anthromadness.blogspot.ae/2015/04/the-jewishness-of-ethiopian-jews_7.html)), Oromos (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oromo_people) and so on were substantially West Eurasian, hell, I even blogged about this (http://anthromadness.blogspot.ae/2015/07/horn-africans-mixture-between-east.html)... But there's no evidence for what you wrote in that last part of your post. The pre-dominant Eurasian HGs in the Horn (paternal or maternal) don't fit with some sort of massive migration from Arabia over the last 2 to 3 thousand years, there's only evidence of some admixture in Habeshas likely from around 2,800 to 3,000 years ago as I mention here (http://www.anthrogenica.com/showthread.php?5577-4500-year-old-Ethiopian-Y-DNA-E1b1-mtDNA-L3-and-considerable-Eurasian-admixture&p=113346#post113346) and even that whilst non-negligible is not seeming substantial but this was a contender for where he could've got his subclade; very old Habesha-related ancestry.

Most of the West Eurasian ancestry in us is seemingly very ancient / pre-historic (especially in respect to Cushitic speaking groups like Somalis) stuff and unless there was some massive population replacement event across Arabia over the last 2 to 3k years; Arabians aren't the source of our West Eurasian ancestry. This guy is quite out of the ordinary for Somalis when it comes to how our Eurasian HGs tend to turn out subclade wise... F.e. My mtDNA N1a is an as of yet unclassified subclade of N1a1a3 that's probably more tied to other East African groups (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rendille_people) with Cushitic ancestry that N1a is found among (certainly not inherited from some Arabian great great great grandmama ;)) rather than seeming like some South Arabian subclade like his J1. I'm willing to bet other Somalis who turn up as J1 especially in more inland regions like Eastern Ethiopia (http://ethiohelix.blogspot.ae/2015/06/more-ethiopian-uniparental-data-more.html); don't share in this subclade but we'll see. But very interesting if they do and very interesting if they don't...

I am not sure I understand what the issue here is..isn't it quite obvious the somali is descended paternally to most likely a southern arabian..? j1 is not native to somalia right?

This remains to be seen, J1's history in East Africa might well be more complex than previously thought.
